I am building a new PC. I was wondering before I buy my OS. All of my hardware supports a 64 bit OS. If I bought and installed Windows x64 edition would I still be able to install all my old programs on it? Or would I be stuck with a limited # of 64 bit apps? Thanks - PeaInAPod

Yes, all your old apps will just run in 32 bit mode on the OS I beleive.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

not really. I have installed windows x64 on a pc at work and there were some software clashes that stopped me from using all my programs.

I currently run an athlon 64 machine with XP 64 and have yet to run into an app that doesn't run on it. There may be a few out there but most companies have patched their applications for any inconsistancies. I run everthing from Office, Adobe Apps, Roxio 8, AnyDVD/CloneDVD, AIM. All my hardware had drivers either built into windows or available from the manufacturer. Unfortunately with as many applications as there are for windows it is trial and error. I suggest contacting the application companies if you have any doubts. Send and email request to their support and see what they say. But for the most part your 32bit apps should run.

Good luck. The only apps that you may run into a problem on are apps designed for windows 9x (Me and below). But XP 64 is still based off the NT kernel so if it is designed for Windows 2000/XP it should work and may only need a minor update patch. At least that has been my experience.

Hope it all works out. I have been running XP 64 for months now and everything has been great. The only problem I had initially was finding a good Antivirus software. I hunted around and then low and behold it came time for the school I work for to renew their Antivirus licensing and Me and another tech were given a free copy of Symantec Antivirus 10 which works with 32bit windows and 64bit Windows.
