I recently recieved a CD that was converted from a VHS Tape onto a CD.
Its a 4.7/GB data disc, from Staples. It wont play in our DVD player and I was wondering if there was a particular player needed in order to play it?, or is there another rememdy for the problem?
Thanks so much for any help and advice.

There are a variety of reasons a DVD won't play on a standalone DVD player.

Poor quality media was used.
The disk was burned at too fast a speed.
The DVD player is incompatible with the media or is picky.
The DVD is not compliant with DVD standards.

Most of the time it's a combo of the first two above.

Do you have a DVD drive on your computer? Is the disk playable in that drive?

If you have a DVD drive on your computer, you can download the free version of DVDInfoPro and run it with the disk in your drive.

http://www.dvd-recordable.org/wwwimgs/media/flash/dvdinfopro/index.htm

If you click the Media icon, the program will read the disk and ID the media/manufacturer code for the disk. Post that info back to this thread.

If you click the magnifying glass icon it will test the disk for CRC read errors. This will determine whether the contents of the disk are readable.

MacAndI, take a look in my signature for the link to check your DVD player compatibility. Some DVD players, especially older ones, have problems playing burned DVD discs.

Some DVD players have problems playing DVD+ media while others can't play DVD- (or both).

Good luck...

That's a huge CD! LOL

I hope you meant DVD.

Staple's uses some pretty crappy manufacturers like Cmags and Moser Bauer. They may burn ok,but stand alone players will have a greater chance of having issues with them. Pixellation/freezing/skipping/and no disc errors are just a few.

What type of dvd burner did you use to place the VHS onto dvd? PC DVD-RW drive or TV dvd recorder?

Media quality is affected by both pc burners and stand alone tv burners.

Tv burners: The discs have to be finalized to be able to view on stand alone players. They also have to be in VR mode, and not V mode-I believe?

Make sure the burner that produced that backup, can play it.Let us know how you produced that so-called CD.
