stick it in the PC as the slave drive and make sure to set the jumper settings to either slave or cable select.
Then see if the PC recognizes it by going into my computer and seeing if the second hard drive is there.
If it is the just right click on the new drive and select format from the drop down menu.

Get a partition program, e.g. Norton PartitionMagic, and you should be able to see the harddrive in there. Use that to format it to whatever format you want (NTSC/FAT32). That's what I did for mine and it worked perfectly

Nice one
I completely forgot about Partition Magic
Although it is not a free program if you search hard enough
and in the right places you can of course find it for free :)

Hi again, It's a 30gb 2.5" laptop hard drive in a usb caddy, and no it
does not recognise it in the bios. I tried it in a laptop as single
drive also but that does not see it either!!

i say just get yourself a regular IDE HDD
You can get an 80GB HDD for $45 or less.
I don;t think i own a HDD under 160GB as they are mostly useles for PS2, Xbox and PC these days.
The only other thing i can think of is to take it to a PC shop and see what they can do, but for that price you could just buy the 80GB hard drive.

What happened was I was messing around with the 2.5" hdd and hd advance
and formatted it for the PS2. I then realised that I could not reformat
it back to ntfs or fat32.I just want to be able to use it as a big usb
drive again to move files around! I use a 120gb hdd for the PS2.
Anybody else got any other ideas???
Thanks.

When the HDD is plugged in, can you see it in, say, Winhiip?

Yes there is no problem with the drive, it's just that windows will not
recognise the formatting on it so can't see the drive at all, it's ok in
winhiip. My problem is trying to reformat it to ntfs or fat32 when
windows will not see it!

Doing a search on the error message you got when you use Partition Magic, apparently someone used the program PTEDIT.EXE to fix a similar problem to yours (although it was just a general HDD problem, nothing related to PS2). For instructions on this program and download: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/powerquest.nsf/0/8c708a9c164...

What i did to get mine back to NTFS was, do a full format with WINHIIP to ps2 then in windows goto control panel administrative tools then diskmanagement, a popup will appear askign if you want to mount the drive follow the steps then create a new partition on your drive with it. Its what i used and im now running XP on my new computer.
EDIT: Or you would rather once its mounted you can use Partition Magic, your HDD should show up as unallocated space (yellow).

All else fails, go to the hard drive manuf and download their disk uttility and perform a "low level" format. There are also programs out there, gdisk by symantec for eg, that with delete the MBR (master boot record) and you can reformat. If you don;t see the drive in the BIOS, your bios may not support usb boot devices.
