I have seen very little info on the new SM CODER and I have seen a couple of questions so I decided to look into it before upgrading from SM3. First off the cheat system for CODER is built in to the boot disc. It does not run a seperate copy of Action Replay. It looks to use the same engine as Action Replay NOT ACTION REPLAY MAX. Looking over the codes that are used with CODER they are HEXCODE. Please note that ARMax does not use HEXCODE codes only the NON MAX AR. For those of you who do not know HEXCODE consist of number 0-9 and letter A-F

AR Code: CEA06404 BCA9E183
AR MAX Code: R0A2-DHPB-5Y3TW

As you can see the AR Max code goes beyond standard HEXCODE. The link on the Swap Magic 3 website links to the Action Replay section of Code Junkies not the MAX section. Here is how this effects those of you looking to upgrade: Codes are no longer produced for Action Replay for New Games. If you want to use cheat codes on new games you have to upgrade to AR MAX in which case the codes for AR Max will not work with CODER.

Now with any cheat code system all you are doing in modifying a section of memory to write a permanent value. In case of infinite ammo you would have a section of memory that stores that information lets say your max numerical value is 255. The code system tells the software (game) that the value of that specific range of memory is always 255. To address that memory area and write the value you have your code or codes in place. Most PC emulators use Hexcode. If you have used any of the PC EMU?s that have a built in cheat system you can actually build your own codes by watching the memory used by the game and filtering for changes in values say like after you use up a little ammo. You keep doing a filter and eventually you are left with a memory address and value that the emulator will convert to a hexcode for you. Now that does not help you in this case since there are no good PS2 EMU?s otherwise you could use one to find codes. If you know what you are doing and know how the AR Max System uses the new code system then you may be able to figure out the conversion and convert the AR Max codes to Hex for use with Coder.

Personally I am going to stick with my current setup and Swap Magic 3 + Fliptop + AR Max EVO with USB stick. It works 95% of the time and that is good enough for me.

Hope this helps those of you looking to upgrade. My advise right now is that if you use AR Max for newer games then do not upgrade yet. I have emailed SM support to ask if they will be supporting AR Max codes but have not yet gotten a response

Update: While looking into this I found that someone else has already done the work of converting AR Max code to Hexadecimal.

There are tutorials and utilities you can download that will get you on your way to converting AR Max codes.

From a previous post I did. I have an older model PS2 not the slim using a fliptop swap method

OK, I think I have a solution. I have been having the same problem as most people. And I have tried everything listed above and still end up having issues. The only way I have been able to boot AR Max and then a backup was to not have the memory cards inserted when the PS2 was powered on. I have tried the procedure listed below and it works every time but it does require EVO and the USB stick.

Using: AR Max EVO with USB Stick, Swap Magic 3.6

1. Power off PS2 in the back (this always seems to help after each failed attempt)

2. Remove all memory cards. (Even if you load AR MAX and load the codes from the memory card and then remove it before booting SM it will still fail on most games.)

3. Insert the USB stick with AR Max Codes

4. Power on the PS2 in the back and then press the power button in the front (again if you have a failed attempt turning off the PS2 in the back will help)

5. Once AR Max is booted enter the expert mode

6. Select you game and codes and press start

7. Next press (X) on start game with codes, you will see a message that says be sure your game is inserted

8. Insert Swap Magic DVD or CD disc which ever you need and then press (X)

9. Once the screen goes black and says "Loading Game" Remove the USB Stick.

10. At Swap Magic screen use swap method (fliptop or other) and insert backup

11. Now press (X) and once game has loaded insert memory cards

Please note that I have AR Max EVO and the AR Max with 8MB Memory card device. The one with the 8MB Memory device always causes SM to go to the browser even if I remove after the codes have loaded and before I boot the SM disc. Same thing if I use a regular memory card to load the codes from it always goes back to the browser. I have used the method above and it has worked 95% of the time.

sorry I have the same setup. Old Style PS2, AR Max Evo with 16MB USB stick, 8MB AR Memory Card (I DO NOT USE IT FOR LOADING CODES), Swap Magic 3.6. I've never really had that problem. I think I have one game. The first PS2 Matrix game that the codes do not work for. Other then that all other codes work. Do you have any games that you can play for which AR does not need a code update? Boot up your AR Disc with NO Memory Cards and NO USB stick. Just load the codes off the CD. Then see if you have codes listed for any games you have. If so follow the procedure above. Just insert the SM3.6 disc and select the game and codes and then boot to the disc. Once you are at the SM screen insert your backup and press X. If that works then maybe you have some corrupt data on your USB stick. Every now and then I get data that doesn't want to work with anything and I have to format the USB stick and redownload the code list off the internet. I always do it from my PC never from my PS2, that sometimes causes problems...

then I don't think it is a problem with your PS2 or your AR. I would try to reformat your USB stick and then download the latest codes and try again.

Something else is how many codes are you trying to load when it doesn't work. I know that loading to many codes will cause problems. Other then that I'm sorry but I don't know what to tell you other then to maybe look into getting something other then AR.

Code Breaker or Game Shark I hear work really well...

just plug it into your computer. Then go to my computer and right click on the drive letter of the usb stick. Select format. Just like you would format a floppy

AR Max will load the codes from the USB stick. No need to put them on the memory card. In fact don't even put a memory card into the PS2 until you have the game loaded.

Try these steps in order:

1. Turn of PS2 using the switch in the back. Not the stand-bye in front.
2. Remove all memory cards.
3. Insert USB stick. You should only have the USB stick and a controller plugged in.
4. Power on PS2 from the back. Then power on in the front/ take it out of stand-bye mode.
5. Insert AR CD and wait for it to boot up.
6. Select expert mode and wait for the codes to load and display the games.
7. Select the game you want and then select the codes.
8. Press Start and a window will come up with a "Start with Codes, Start without Codes, etc.." SELECT START WITH CODES
9. Now a windows will come up that says. Be sure your game is inserted. Now use the eject button (NOT THE FLIPTOP) and insert the Swap Magic Disc.
10. Press X and the screen will go black and you will see a message "Now Loading" When you see this message REMOVE the USB stick.
11. After a few seconds you should have the Swap Magic screen up. USE THE FLIPTOP and insert your backup. Press X
12. After the game loads you can insert your memory card.

ALWAYS POWER OFF YOUR PS2 BEFORE YOU USE THE AR MAX AND SM BOOT. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO IF YOU JUST USE SM BUT IF YOU HAVE TO LOAD CODES IT IS BEST TO POWER OFF IN THE BACK DO NOT JUST PUT IT IN STAND-BYE MODE

I have some games that I can not load cheats for, well they load but the cheats do not work. As to why sometimes there are different versions of the same game. Example: I have a game called Monster Rancher for the kids and it is version 1.03. The origional one was 1.0. All of the versions however look the same, and they have the same title. But it is just a different revission. I am guessing that there was maybe a bug that got fixed in it. My suggestion would be to go rent another copy of Black and try the codes on it without using a backup. If it works then you can make a backup of it. Since you already have a "legal" backup of your origional I don't see the harm in getting a good backup if your origional has issues with codes. Other then that I'm glad that you got things working for you now

Is there a way of putting the cheats on USB and loading them with Swap Magic 3.8 CODER? And if so, could you give me a step by step?
