Low voices on dvd in WMP playback

just did a fresh xp install on my laptop, did a windows update and all drivers installed with no conflicts. Now when i play a dvd on media player 9 and 10, the sound and effects are fine but the voices are very low. I can play it fine on VLC player but it's just media player for some reason. i haven't installed any video or audio codecs but if anyone knows of a fix for this in media player, i would really appreciate it.
