For free there is DVDFab Decrypter (bypasses copyright protection), DVD Shrink (shrinks or as we say transcodes), and DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn to burn the output. The no cost way to go. I prefer AnyDVD (retail) for copyright protection and use RB/CCE for most encoding and I use Nero to burn. There's a freeware version of Rebuilder as well as the donor Pro version and the free HC encoder can be used with it. High quality, but takes a bit longer. I've got a bunch of other apps, but AnyDVD, RB/CCE and Nero see the most use.

When you check out AnyDVD look at CloneDVD 2. I use them 99% of the time for DVD. They haven't let me down yet. Decrypter works really well with abused DVD's.

You're right, DVDD works better than a lot of apps on abused DVDs. I use AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter for ripping files to the hard drive most of the time. However, for abused discs, I use a resurfacing tool and if need be rescue software.

If you decide to use Shrink, look under Help and you'll find links to different guides. The links are still good. For an interactive, quick start guide I suggest the ones at http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php/ .

Yeah, not to change the subject. But my Graeat Dane ate my photo editing software disk one day. I thought it was ruined, but I had some car polishing compound and car wax, "which is abrasive," laying around. I thought what do I have to loose. About 30 min with both and then cleaned, the disks still work today. You do what you can in a pinch. Oh, ok, back to the topic.

The Dane plays with too many of your discs and you'll need to run out and get a motorized Skip Dr like I have. Abrasive wax or rubbing compound will work in a pinch as you pointed out. Anything that will remove the scratches and leave a polished surface works (as long as the damage doesn't go through the outer layer to the inner dye layer). Even with the Skip Dr I've finished the job with a little wax. I was recently working on a DVD and still have a can of Meguiar's on my desk. ;)
