I have been lightscribing for a few months now and would like to know if anyone gets better results from a particular brand. I have an external LG multi-writer. I currently use Verbatim for DVD and CD lightscribing. I enhance my photos in Photoshop CS2 before printing. That works rather well, but I am wondering if different brands have richer and/or deeper images, or are they pretty much the same?

MCC makes the LightScribe coating, and that is what Verbatim (MCC), CMC, and MBI all use. They are the only approved LightScribe suppliers. All factories used to buy the coating directly from MCC, but now they have to buy from HP, who buys it from MCC. The stuff is tough to work with because it has to be kept at a very cold temperature during the two months it is useful. After that the material has to be discarded as too old.

In terms of graphic quality, all discs should produce the same results except that version 1.2 is a bit faster to record. For a 16X drive, it means that your laser will use up 80% of its life recording monochromatic pictures and 20% actual recording of discs. Seems like a waste of time for both customers and the drive.

I stick with the genuine verbatim when it comes to lightscribe/dual layer/and majority of my 16x single layer media. MCC=Mitsubishi chemical corporation. Tough quality specs from all their manufacturing sites. The outer picture quality is nice, but I feel better knowing my data is safe on Advanced Metal AZO dye that verbatim uses. CMC and MBI dye? Lord knows how long those will last?

The lightscribing coating:
Different printing programs can vary a little, and also the quality of the image can vary between burners. Both my dad and I have the HP 640c. His does a great job ,mine's a little worse.

I don't do many, but when I use my HP, I scribe them twice to give a little sharper picture.

Not if you got an HP lightscribe. Mine's more like:95% ripping/reading-5% lightscribing and 0% burning dvd backups. Too many crc errors and burn coasters in mine. I let my benqs do all the burning.
