As a newbie solution, try EasyDivX for DivX rips, it's no-brainer -- download it from here:
*dead link, removed*
Basically there are three formats that people use in ripping, all of them have their pros and cons:
-VideoCD / VCD -- one CD fits (exactly) 74 minutes of better-than-VHS -quality video. The best advantage is that most of the stand-alone DVD players support VCDs directly, i.e. you can watch VCDs with your regular DVD player just like you watch your DVDs. Most of the "serious" DVD ripping groups and musicvideo groups prefer this method because of this thing.
-DivX -- one regular length movie can be fitted into one CD, but most of the people who prefer better quality, prefer 2 CD solution for movies. This means that DivX can be in very various sizes -- you can determine the size of the file when you encode it. DivX, specially if used 2-disc method, has excellent video and audio quality. The biggest nag is that DivX movies cannot be played with any stand-alone DVD players.
-SuperVideoCD / SVCD / SuperVCD -- Quality is excellent, pretty much the same as in DivX. As in DivX, you can choose how much space video takes -- normally people put appx. 40 minutes of video in one CD, which means that most of the movies come in 3-CD sets. SVCD's best advantage over DivX is the fact that most of the modern stand-alone DVD players support it, just like they support VCDs. SVCD has some advantages that other formats don't offer; you can have multiple audio streams that you can change just like you can change those in your DVDs, SVCD supports subtitles that can be turned on or off (and they're integrated into the video stream, so no separate subs files required) and most of the DVD players can show those subtitles as well.
Pretty much your call what you want :-)

dRD, you mentioned that basically all of the versions work on many stand-alond DVD players, but what about the playstation2? I've tried to run VCD's on it before and that didn't work so I'm doubting SVCD's will, what about DivX?

I said that DivX can NOT be played with any stand-alone DVD player as it is not a real standard. As of VCD or SVCD, PS2 doesn't support them, but I guess that there are some companies in Far East that sell you VCD/SVCD adapters for PS2.

FlaskMPEG has certain issues with some users and therefor I wont recommend it for new users -- in other hand, if you've been using Flask successufully, I don't see any reason why you should change from that to another tool. And for TMPGEnc -- according to various independent tests, TMPGEnc produces best VCD quality and second best SVCD quality (right after CCE), so it is absolutely the choice for MPEG-1/2 encoding.
