I have a Dual layer burner on my system, but have never used Dl disks because of the cost. Now I have a couple of big backup jobs coming where having more disk space would be a big help, but the thought of paying $3 a disk or more for dual-layer media bothers me A LOT.

So are the prices for Dl media ever going to come down, or are the upcoming HD-DVD drives going to put DL disks out of production altogether?

You should be able to pick them up for $2 max. I believe there is a sale at Bestbuy starting today so check the sales week thread in this DVD-R media room.

Early last year, they were still $10 apiece. That's a very considerable drop.$2 max is my limit!

Blu-Ray/HD DVD?

The costs are beyond what most of us poor folk can afford, LOL

The 25 gb BR blank runs $20 at Supermediastore.com. TDK is also trying to produce a 200 gb blank. Burners are about $1000 and players are at least $500 to be able to play that newer technology. Most of us wouldn't consider the possibility of a $20 Coaster. We'll be waiting for the prices to drop and quality level of burners and media rise. The media is also 1x/2x and it'd take forever to burn them. I know I'll wait. DVD is a very good picture quality, unlike VHS. It'll be around for a long time.

Dual layers out of production?

They're just now affordable for most of us. The quality level still isn't up there, compared to the single layer. It'll get better. As production increases/costs reduce/yields rise/then prices will fall even further.Just like all technology.

Over the last year and a half, single layer media sales only dropped 10 cents apiece. So DL dropped $8 compared to SL at 10 cents in that time span.

the sale price of the DLs can't come any sooner for me! I won't by them till they drop down to where the printable single layer DVDs are now (in or around the 50cent mark). I can only hope that that happens soon. But there is a threat that with newer technology, the HD-DVD & Blue-Ray, the DVDs will be a thing of the past. I know it will take a long time from now but VHS will be finished this year..... I was finished with them years ago! Got everything that I wanted transfered to DVD... quality sucks but I can definatley relive my son's home run in little league that vaulted his team into the playoffs! LOL But when the DLs come down, I'm looking forward to just ripping and then burning without the encoders/transcoders! Rip and use CopyToDVD! priceless!
