I have an HP DVD writer 740e and its not functioning at all.
I would put a black cd or black dvd in the drive and when pressing burn or nero, or windows media player, or press write with the recording wizard it would constantly say that there is no disc in the drive. When i put in a cd( like a program instalation cd) nothing would happen and when i click on the drive icon it says to please insert a cd into the drive...

what is the problem? can u please help me because i need to burn a dvd urgently..
thanks in advance

Go into Device Manager and check the drive, you can also run the troubleshooting wizard from there. Here's the path:

Start
My Computer (right click)
Properties
Hardware
Device Manager
DVD/CD-ROM Drives (expand-double click)
Double click your drive

From there you can check the drive status under the General tab and troubleshoot the drive.

I'm assuming you want to back up a DVD movie. That's what this fourm is supposed to be about. Go to http://www.slysoft.com/ and download AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2 (full function 3 week trials). Turn on AnyDVD then open your DVD files in CloneDVD 2 and see if that works.

It is also against forum rules to multipost, requesting your other thread be closed as you are getting the same help here.

in the forum i had somewhere wat u closed someone said:

"Did you install the drive yourself?
Is this the only disc drive in your computer?
Are the master/slave settings correct?
Does the drive show in My Computer and in Device Manager?
Are there any yellow "?" or "!" showing in device manager beside the drives?
Is your ASPI installed and working properly?"

answer

A Nero burn log in the Nero thread might have supplied some info. Where is that infotool log? I don't understand why people keep pushing ASPI on XP. XP doesn't come with an ASPI layer. ASPI rarely needs to be installed. Apps like Nero carry their own.

Hitting the reply button multiple times is a problem as well. LOL Once is sufficient. Seeing the time frame was spread by several minutes, what's going on?

On the back of the drive there should be a section with three pair of pins (typically), they should be labelled something like CS (cable select), MA (master), and SL(slave), on one of these sets there will be a jumper. The drive that is at the end of your IDE ribbon should be jumpered (set) to master using the pins, the drive that is next should be set to slave.

As for the ASPI, here is some reading for you...

LOL, you are too fast for me...I was just offering it up as a suggestion, mine was corrupt a few weeks ago and XP wouldn't pick up Nero's, so I thought it might be of use.

LOCOENG is right, except with systems like the Dells where all the drives are set to CS and the system sorts out the master/slave. The ribbon (cable) positions still apply (master on the end connector).

LOCOENG
Nero has a download for their own ASPI. However, I find it easier to delete the app and reinstall when the files become corrupted. If things get stubborn, I use the cleaner tools.

Mine was so corrupt, both of my drives disappeared...nothing in my computer and code 41 in device manager. I had to delete the upper and lower filters in regedit to get them back...it seems as if AnyDVD was masking my drives. Don't have a clue what happened there.

HOW TO ... Delete the Upper & Lower Filters!

back of drive

There are 3 options, Cable Select, Slave, and Master.

Selection is done by means of a jumper, the option you choose will depend on your system set-up.

* Master should be selected if this will be the only device on a single IDE cable, or, if it is the second device to be connected and the other device is set to slave.
* Slave should be selected if this will be the second device on a singe IDE cable, for instance, if you do not already have a CD-ROM drive then you could attach the new device to the same IDE cable as your hard drive (where your hard drive will be the master).
* Cable Select should be selected only when the devices are to be attached as the cable depicts, ie, the first connector (working away from the motherboard) is the slave and the last connector is the master device.

Thanks for the info Ireland. I'll have to remember that. Had it been me, I might have been thinking about reloading the OS. If a person messes up the registry, that's the next step anyway. ;)

Thanks Ireland. I've got Registry Mechanic, which has been doing a good job for me. It's quick on the scans and repairs and does a registry backup. The price is noticeably higher than what you have there. ;) It keeps my registry cleaned up and I've not had any registry concerns in the longest. When/if I get a registry problem, this is where I go before I start considering the OS replacement.
