Just a question for all you intelligent people out there... When I back up my DVDs, some will play in my Apex player, and some will not. For the ones that do not, the screen simply says "DVD-ROM." However, these back-ups that do not play appear to play fine in the PS2. They are all backed up the same way, using AnyDVD and DVD Shrink. I've read about firm ware and stand alone players and the like. So the question is... Any new ideas why?

Thanks, I'm technologically challenged.

Currently Memorex DVD+R 16x. But I've used several kinds including Sony, Imation, Dynex, and GreatAZO (all +R 8x). All have given me the same issue. Some play in my Apex fine while others give me the DVD-ROM screen (while playing in the PS2). Maybe I should get a different brand of player? Maybe it's the +R? Is there something in the Shrink I need to change? Or Nero? Or should I offer the computer a sacrifice before each back up?

Electronically grateful...

try booktyping your DVD+R as it makes them more campatible with dvd players.

That error is just like a No Disc Inserted error. There's something about your media that your apex doesn't like. But the good news,it does play some of your plus format backups.

First thing to change: Media quality.Memosux/Dynex/Imation/and probably Great AZO has a majority of crap manufacturers. Your apex is a picky player because it is having issues with some of your backups.

gjl2002 posted booktyping your backups. This is only if you have a booktyping capable drive like Benq/LG/Lite-on/plextor/Ricoh. Not all drives support booktyping, and some can have modified/hacked fw to achieve this: Nec and Pioneer. Booktyping usually takes care of that no disc error. Only the plus format can be booktyped.

If you burner doesn't have booktyping capability, then the dash format would be the next highest, compatability wise. You may have to give it a shot.

Stand alone player No disc Inserted errors:

1) Media quality-definitely get some better media.
2) Burn speed-too fast
3) Paper/sticker labels-major no-no
4) Wrong format-switch to the opposite
5) It may not even play any format of backups at all-it don't like your burner!
6) Burn program

Those stand alone players do some weird things when it comes to reading backup dvds. You may have to find the right combination of the above to get the best playback from stand alone players.

Thanks guys.

So first off, better media type. I suppose Sony is alright. I've also used TDK with the same results. Any recommendations?

Secondly, use only 4x - 8x speeds.

Thirdly, booktyping. I have a NEC ND-3500A (16x DVD±R/RW DL Drive). Can I change the booktyping with this drive? How?

Sorry to ask so many questions. You guys rock.

As for the media, I would suggest Verbatim (MIJ or MIT) or Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Fuji, Maxell (MIJ only).

It is recommended to burn at only half the rated speed of the media you are using.

The NEC drive is capable of bitsetting/booktyping.

Thanks guys! I will try that as soon as possible. I love this place. But this is the first time I've had to ask a question. I appreciate it.

I'll be back with any problems. Thanks again!

I have found that Apex are not very reliable. I had an Apex player and it would not even play some of the original disks. I no longer have it. I spent a little more money to get a better player. You get what you pay for. I no longer have that problem.

Apex players are like majority of players. Some will play anything you slap in them, some are picky.I had one. When I ran into discs it wouldn't recognize,it'd have that little disc icon at the top of the screen just spinning away.It would not play backups off of some of my non benq drives. My booktyped benq backups-played everything and perfect picture. The ex-wife got that player.

Some stand alone players can picky. Maybe pixellation/freezing/jumping/skipping/and the dreaded no disc error. They can tell differences between any of those Items I listed in my earlier post, and a slew of other possibilities.

Stand alone players were meant to play the original dvd movies, which are dvd-rom format. The best way to fix your backups that give you no disc errors,is to set the booktype to dvd-rom. These are not actual dvd-roms,but when inserted into players-they think they are dvd-rom. A little trickeration!

They can even tell a difference between burners! When issues arrise, media quality is first thing to change, then burn speed, and the trouble shooting list goes on. The wear and tear of these stand alones can also give them more trouble when playing backups.

When they can't play an original dvd,and a lens cleaning disc doesn't help-then time to spend another $25-$35 for another player.

LOCOENG,

When I went to the Burn Settings tab, I could change the speed to 4x from what it was set at (max I think), but the Book type DVD-ROM was already check and grayed out (so I couldn't uncheck it if I wanted).[Burn at least 30mm was already check as well but accessable.] So, apparently, I've been doing this all along.

We'll see how the 4x burn and playback goes, but what else could it be?

Nero will automatically booktype for you...if you want to check you can inspect the disc after the burn with Nero CD/DVD speed, it will tell you the booktype information...you can also use DVD Decrypter, if a disc is inserted in ISO read mode under...last recorded, it will give you the current format of the disc.

The only other suggestion that I can give you is to try the Deep Analysis and AEC controls under the quality tab in DVD Shrink. These will smooth out some of the wrinkles caused by high compression ratios, which will affect playback.
