Newbie Help with AVI files. Combining and writing to DVD-R

I just got a DVD recorder last night. It's all installed and set up in my computer. But I have no idea how to use it. The movie files I want to burn are AVI files. I have a couple problems. First my movie is split into two AVI files? How to I combine them into 1 file? I tried a program online (I forget the name) and it combined the files but I lost the sound on the second half.
And then lastly after I combine my file how to I get it to be able to be played on my DVD player?

There are LOADS of guides in the Afterdawn forums.
You will want to convert your .avi files into .mpeg format in order to burn to a DVD-R(+R).
There is free software available for you to download which will do the convert/encode process your after (it takes a lonnng time tho)
It's quicker to rip/compress/burn a copy of original DVD.
I'd suggest going & reading a lot more before progressing , plus use a DVD-RW(+RW) the 1st time round.

Herbsman, I have a question about using the DVD+RW instead of +R. Can the +RW be played on a stand alone DVD player without finalizing it first?
I have tried converting avi files using TBMGEnc which took about 2hrs. and 40mins. to convert to mpeg files (Coyote Ugly). It plays on the computer but not on the stand alone after burning with RecordNow Max. I am still working on that problem. Any suggestions.

No , I'd imagine that the closure of the disc might well make it playback though.
If you have a RW compatible stand alone dvd player

I just tried to answer my own question by copying a movie to a +RW disc and then play it on the stand alone DVD player. I used RecordNow Max. Well it played OK, but may have finalized it automatically. I can't seem to format the +RW DVD. Read only files.

I do not gain much by recording on the +RW, except to check out the quality on computer playback if I can not format it afterwards. Would be nice to be able to record to +RW, check it out on stand alone DVD player, then be able to erase the files. Then record to +R. This would prevent the mfg of coasters maybe. Especially in the Newbie tryout mode I am in now.

I have a Pioneer DVD-RW 104
I can full-erase in NERO
A better way to try quality rather than RW might be to check .VOB's with PowerDVD.
As for whether it plays on stand alone player is always a different matter but if you find a way that is totally successful for you & then stick to it , they'll be no need for RW hardly ever (that is where I'm at).

PowerDVD came with my Dell (NEC ND-1100A) writer, but I installed the writer on a non-Dell computer, so I was unable to install PowerDVD. Not familiar with the program.

You must be playing the start of the DVD with soemthing cos a DVD needs to be unlocked by playing the beginning.
Perhaps WMP (windows media player) , WinDVD etc?
I use Power DVD personally , I find it to be quite good at what it does...
Whatever works though!: )

I can generally play movie files on the computer using one of several different programs. If PowerDVD is a program that plays DVD's on the computer, I can perform that task using something else. If it does some other task, I may be missing something. Thanks, Ron.

You need a Progr like TMPGenc DVD author to create a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS structure out of your Mpeg. I did it twice and it works on a standalone player.
