Hey everyone. It's been a while. My fat PS2 just started having, "disk read errors." Can I use a HD loader of some sort or will I have to get the lens fixed first?

I have two WD 120gb hard drives, the compatibilyt list stated they would
work with HDLOADER (or so I belive, HD this, HD that, it gets confusing.) I have a network adapter and am currently getting a HDLOADER iso.

I have HDDUMP and can get HDADVANCE.
Any ideas?

-PS2 with lens read error
-2 120gb hard drives
-A computer which has a DVD drive for burning in both formats
-Network Adapter
-HDloader Iso.
-Stock sony memory card

Any ideas?

YOu can use HDLoader to play games from HDD, but if you want to play games on a DVD you'll still need to replace your laser.

Check here for compatibility: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/
I think you'll find that a lot of people have reported problem with WD HDDs

i would say fix the laser. It would still have to be able to read the HD Loader disc to use a hard drive, and i am not sure how HD Loader works but if it is like the DMS4 Pro modchip and loads games on the hard drive by using the DVD tray you would need a good laser just to get the games on the HDD, unless you put them on by using your PC and Winhiip

Drat, that's what I figured. I was planning on transferring from my pc to the PS2 HD and then putting the PS2 HD back into the PS2.

Which one do you recommend? HDLOADER or HDADVANCE?

Hm.... I figure that I will use my friends old PS2 to install HDL onto the HD. Othern then that first time will I ever need to put the CD back into the PS2 again? (he has a modchip, so it should put up the HDL iso copy I make.)

I was recently reading about a MC exploit? It appears to be the key in me not having to use my lazer again. I read about the need of a ps1 game, is that only for the first time or everytime afterward?

My lazer loads Tony Hawk 3, but not a single other game.

Anyway to avoid using the lazer after installing HDLoader? I will transfer games from my PC

You could put HDLoader on your memory card (assuming you have a way to boot files from the memory card - but if you are looking at the memory card exploit thing then I'm assuming you probably don't?) and load it from there.

As for the memory card exploit, you'll need to use a PS1 game disc everytime you want to use it, i.e. you'll still need your laser to work for that to work.

HDLoader and HDAdvance are basically the same thing, personally I'd suggest using HDLoader 0.7c

Okay so I could put HDLOADER on my memory card if I have a way to boot it. By booting I figure you mean using a CD right?

Ehhh, :( I am going to send my PS2 to get fixed, well actually to exchange it for another one. They offered to fix my own but it would cost more and only one thing would be new (in this case the lazer.) With the other one I would just trade mine in for a working one with everything fixed.

I hope they don't mess up and send me the slim line. After that, I will probably get a chip installed in Chinatown NYC.

Get a good chip installed (Matrix Infinity, DMS4), those chips have DEV2 mode, which lets you boot directly from memory card without the use of CD/DVDs, which will be good on the laser, and it'll save you a lot of trouble as well, if you plan on mainly loading games from HDD (there'll be the occassional games that you'll need to load from disc because they won't work with HDLoader - but not many)

Thank you for all your information. :) I am wondering if anyone in NYC knows how much it would cost to get the chip installed?

I ended up getting my PS2 repaired by SONY. I actually had it exchanged for another V4 since reparing the lens would cost me more and provide a warranty simply for the lens. By replacing the unit I was able to get all new parts. After it came back I sent the PS2 to get chipped by a modchip service in California. They installed the chip and sent it back to me. Now I am playing my legal back ups off a 400 gig Seagate HD.
