Ive been using Memorex discs to burn my backups for about a year now. Ive never had a problem with them they always work great and play great in all my dvd players. I have heard everyone saying that they are bad discs to use and its got me worried that they will stop working as time goes on. Has anyone else had any experience with them and have they ever crapped out on you over time. Thanks

If you ask the MFG they will tell you that disks do eventually become unuseable. However, this is due to the condition of the disk, scrathes, damage, etc...
I have never had a DVD that worked well, stop working if the condition of the data side was still good. However, sometimes you will have disks that might have slight errors that will not allow them to play on certain DVD players.
When I make a DVD I test it on my computer and two DVD players to make sure it works on all. I have DVDs that other people say aren't that good quality, and ones that are supposed to be great, for years, and they all still work fine.

If they burn right, they should work fine.

No one can say for sure how long burned media will last, some say 5 years others say 30. As whiskeyfa states it depends on the condition and storage of the media. The problem with Memorex disks is that they are not consistent, and you may get a good batch and then get a bad one. If they work for you and you have no problems with them then keep on using them, although trying a better brand would be good. My experiences with Memorex were not good, many did not burn well and those that did if I tried a rerip gave CRC errors. I only used a 50 spindle so the loss was not great, but I changed my media to better quality and have no problems with any of my burned DVD's even those that are several years old and done with the old Xcopy, all play fine and have reripped them with no troubles.

That there explains media quality! That's a very simple test anywho can perform. To see the overall quality of your backups, try re-ripping them using your normal, day to day backup process-and try to get it back onto your harddrive without getting a crc error. An even riskier test: Re-rip those backups on the fly!

Low quality=more errors. Too many of those little errors,or in the wrong spots-bam- You'll get crc errors.

Burner quality is also a contributor to why low quality media performs great for some peeps, and others have horror stories about them.

Cmags: My benq will burn them all day long. They'll burn anything you throw at them and at over 99.9+% success rate.Even UME/AML/and MBI.
I take precautions with the lower quality media. No burning at the max speed, but basic 4x. Reduced backup target of 4300 mbs.

Yes I can burn cmags. Their scans are slightly worse-more pif errors than the quality media that has been burned faster. But stand alone players do have a harder time with them. The picky ones will have playback issues with cmags. Maybe not a brand new/el cheap player-but the older ones with more wear and tear on them.

I got a hold of a batch of Memorex +8x that turned up as Ritek-R03. Sweet media, and huge quality difference than the Cmag memorex. The odds of getting cmags are about 70% or so.The price for memorex cmags and Ritek-r03 are the same!
