HI I DONT KNOW MUCH BUT CAN ANYONE TELL AT WHICH SPEED IS BETTER FOR BURNIG DVDS, THANKS.

well it depends on the speed of your burner.rule of thumb is,burn at half of the max of the media.if it says 16x burn at 8x,and so on.it just depends on the user.i like to burn alittle slower then half,better quality i think.but half is what everyone says,good luck on your burns, odie241

lots depends on our burn speed ,whats your PC specs.? Burner? etc.what kind of media are you using?
i burn at 8x with 8x media using Taiyo Yuden with a pretty good machine per my sig

I burn mine at 8X, on 8X media, and they turn out just fine.
The exception is when I burn DL media. I use Verbatim, and it burns at 2.4X, which also turns out great!

I echo the sentiments of the other members with the addition of you may want to experiment with different speeds up to the rated speed of the drive & or media Excepting with the DL media it's still a little expensive to be rolling dice with ! you canwith certain media and drives Overspeed = burn at faster than the rated speed but then you error rates may go up with the increase in speed !

One of these days I'm gonna try some 16X media. So far, the highest speed media I've bought is 8X. I always use "Max" speed, when burning. Since the media is 8X, that's the speed it burns.
My burner is supposed to be capable of 16X, I think.

If I leave the burn setting at max using my benq drives,they will burn majority of 8x media at 12x and 16x.
I stick with 8x. To control the overburn, I use qsuite 2.0 to burn at the rated speed of the media-max.
A lot of other burners also overburn 8x media.
8X for me majority of the time. If you got a quality burner,using quality media-then 8x should be no trouble. I've got scans of MCC-004 verbatim +16x. The errors are fewest at 8x. 12x is right along with them. Under 4x-my issues occur: CRC errors at 2.4x and more errors at 4x.
If you're unsure- Burn half the recommended speed of your blank media. Expirament with different burn speeds and test them out in all the stand alone players/game consoles/and pc drives that you plan on viewing your backups.

With the exception of the dual layer Verbs, which give better results at 4X than at 2.4 on my machine, I always burn 8X media at 4X. Lately I've tried alot of experimenting with overspeeding, I love the ultra fast burn times, playback so far has not been an issue, but the resulting scans at higher speeds scare me.
Libg, make sure your firmware is up-to-date and only use quality media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Makes all the difference in the world at any speed!

i burn at 4x on my 8x Ritek media...playback issues will become a real problem if you burn to fast.

trial and error, personal experimentation is the real "KEY" here to finding a suitable speed YOUR setup likes to burn at, depending on the make/model of your drive AND the media you choose to use, burning @8x SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM as the others have pointed out.
i've been burning all my media @8x for the last 2 years, even before i joined AD and found everyone was "recommending" burning things @4x, which i feel is a "good start/good rule of thumb;" however, on QUALITY media these days (8x rated or 16x rated), burning @4x is NO LONGER A NECESSITY, paid a premium for 8x rated media when 4x rated media was "the norm," and 8x rated media was not widely available yet...these days, media tech. has taken yet another step forward, with the 16x rated media becoming WIDELY available and burn speeds have the potential to INCREASE...
either way, just take into consideration WHICH media you are using and what type/model burner you have; IF you have a Benq drive, as saugmon mentioned, i can attest to POOR quality backups burning @4x or slower, with MUCH better quality at 8x & 12x on 16x rated media; i PERSONALLY get my BEST scores burning my 8x rated media @8x (i only use Taiyo Yuden and Verbatims at this point, but mainly TYs) :)
good luck, this is an instance where you can have ALL THE OPINIONS and suggestions by ALL the members in the world of AfterDawn, BUT you need to figure out and determine, WHAT WORKS THE BEST FOR YOU ON YOUR PARTICULAR SETUP w/ YOUR CHOICE OF MEDIA :)
p.s. FIRMWARE is very important, regardless of which burner you use, make sure to have it updated to the most recent...

It's all about personal experience. With my DVD burner, I can burn at 8x max. Yes I have a old, crappy dvd burner, but it does the job. On my system it chokes when it comes to burner at 8x, which usually produces buffer underun error. 6x is alright for me. But with my personal experience (it all comes down to that again), I burn everything at 4x.
Every point that kivory666 made is all vaild, so play around with your burner and see what works for you.

ive been burning on sony DVD-R 16x (tyg03)and have burned all my movies at 16x, around 80 or 90 and only had 1 fail because i tried to overburn.

I burn my dvds at 16x with a sony 810 external burner which I think BenQ makes. I use 16x DVD+R verbs for my media and am well into my 3rd 50 disc spindle of them with no coasters. All my quality disc scans i have done have been 93+ most around the 96-97 range. Good luck with your burns
