a friend of mine asked me if it is possible to softmod a PS2, personally i dont have a clue. im more of an xbox fanboy, so is it possible to softmod a ps2? and if so would you need a Hdd to save the softmod to it, or would you use the memory card?
there are several things you can do. And none of the require a hard drive although that is a great addition to add on to a PS2 making it more Xbox like whwre you can store all your games on it and increase loading times and decrease laser wear.
1. get a memory card exploit
2. get a set of swap magic discs and an aftermarket fliptop (older chunky models)
3. get swap magic discs and an aftermarket fliptop, or swap magic discs and a tool that goes by a million different names like
slimtool, ghost switch, magic switch, magic keys and so on (newer slimline models)
4. best but most expensive way is not a softmod and that is to get a quality modchip installed.

No, it is not cheap for sure, but Swap Magic has it's own drawbacks.
It will work with the other mod i listed just fine but for a novice user it will take time and effort to learn how to rebuild some games, rip DVD9 down to DVD5, remove dummy files from some games, use a cheat disc with swap magic.
But with the DMS4 Pro SE chip and the HD Combo case with HDD installed you are pretty much set for a more than happy gaming experience.
I am getting my V12 with DMS4 Pro put in an HD Combo case with 250GB HDD in the next few weeks once the guy i know gets more in.
Yeah I'm getting one installed myself, was going to install it myself but just don't have the time myself, so getting a friend who used to mod PS2s to get it done for me. Otherwise the other people I have talked to here (New Zealand) charge like $200 for installation (which is just under $100 US I believe)

I did a favor for a guy so he is doing mine for $65, plus the cost of shipping. Which i thought was very fair since the case itself it almost that much.
