Dear all,

I am looking for a one-stop application that quickly compresses vob files into smaller avi or mpeg files.

I have been looking around on the web A LOT but have not yet found it. I was hoping that some of the members here could help me out.

One of my professors at uni wants to store video material on a server so that his students can perform content analysis. He asked me to help him out.
But:
- the collection now consists of over 10 dvd's, so fast compression is desired
- disk space is limited (a few gigs max) so high compression is also desired
- the video files need to be in avi or mpeg format so that the analyis software can open them (Transana)

I have all the vob files (that contain excerpts from tv programs) stored on my hard drive.

Ideally, I am looking for free software that can batch process these files in one go. It should do about 10:1 compression and shouldn't take more time than realtime. Video size can be small (around 320*240) and of reduced quality, but audio quality should be good. When the job 's finished I'll burn them on a dvd and put them on the server.

I can get rougly what I want with DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc, but the process is too laborious (or am I overlooking something?).

Ideas anyone?

Hi Tunk, do you have *.bup, *.ifo files along with the VOB files?

AoA DVD Ripper (http://www.aoamedia.com/dvd_ripper.htm ) is recommended.

To reduce the output file size and get the best quality, please follow the instructions below.

1. Download and install DivX codec. http://www.x-kit.com/codec/DivX511Bundle.exe .
2. Set the output format as AVI (DivX, Xvid...).
3. Set the avi video codec as DivX. (settings > AVI Setting > Video Codec).
4. Set the video size to 320*240 (settings > Output > Resolution).

Here is a step-by-step guide, which is very useful.
