so my almost 3 year old son ripped off the lazer on my slim ps2.
sony said 45 + shipping for a refurb.. but do i have any other options?
maybe put in a laptop drive or find some way to attach (solder) a IDE cable into my ps2 and rip games over to that from my pc..

let me know.. i dont feel like sending in my ps2 since i plan on just buying another one down the road at a used game store

No, you must use the official sony laser for your version ps2. Also, you can solder an IDE cable into your ps2 (if you have the right version), but it won't help if you don't have a laser (you have to be able to boot the hard drive program).

There are tons of repair parts available on the web, whatever you need, from the laser assembly to the complete drive, and far cheaper and much quicker than sending it in for repair.

thanks for the info.
guess i will hit ebay for parts.. not like hooking this stuff up would be hard.

i did find a zip or rar on some other site showing where to soder up the IDE wires so i might as well do that.. just need to find a better DIY for it somewhere as all they had were images of where you would put the wires but did not say what the wires on the ide are
