Hello everyone. I usually use Shrink and it works fine, but I bought a PAL DVD(Region 5) and tried to Convert it with Shrink and burn with Nero, but after 2 attempts (1 with compression on automatic, 2nd No compression), the image on dvd player is cut in half. It shakes and I can only see half the image. The files play in Power dvd. Is it Nero or is shrink not compressing right? Please help. Many thanks.

Maybe this is a noobie question, but why don't you just burn it with Shrink? It works for me.

Shrink does not burn by itself it's synched with Nero and starts up automatically (u can pick dvd --Nero, or create Iso on HD).
My player is Phillips (DVP642) which plays everything. and it's not a cheap media reason that all techies seem to love as i burned fine on these dvds before.
Any suggestions?
thanks very much

I'm not sure shrink will convert from PAL to NTSC. I personally have no experience in that regard, but it seems that's what your problem is.
I googled "convert dvd pal to ntsc" and came up with the following link:

waynekusa has a very good idea but there is a learning curve w/ TMPGEnc Plus . The program below might be a little easier and hopefully do what you need. There are other free programs so if these do not work there are others and then there are the programs you purchase. Just remember you are changing the framerate and so quality might suffer. You might consider buying a DVD player that plays PAL and NTSC. I think it is manuf. by CyberHome and is fairly cheap.

EDIT: Shrink just compresses and does not convert

Thank you very much Car.Mike, always nice when the gurus take the time with us "uninitiated" ;)But what I cannot understand is why the image is distorted, if the copy was still in PAL it would give me "wrong region" error that it gave with the Original PAL dvd. Sound is fine but the omage is cut, that's why i was more inclined to think it was a compression or a burn prob.
Enlighten me if you would be so kind.

I know you didn't ask me, but when you click backup in shrink, the second tab, DVD Region, is set by default to Region Free, explaining why you don't get the "wrong region" message. The reason your video is distorted is because:
Quote: With video-based source material, there are two predominant worldwide formats; PAL and NTSC, which differ in both resolution and in frame rate. PAL is higher in resolution (576 horizontal lines) than NTSC (480 horizontal lines), but NTSC updates the on-screen image more frequently than PAL (30 times per second versus 25 times per second). What does this mean in practice? NTSC video is lower in resolution than PAL video, but because the screen updates more frequently, motion is rendered better in NTSC video than it is in PAL video. There is less jerkiness visible. When video source material is transferred to DVD, it is usually transferred in the format it was created in - PAL or NTSC, and the subsequent image has either higher temporal resolution (more frames per second - NTSC) or higher spatial resolution (more lines per image - PAL).

Scorpinna ,
The problem I think you are getting is a shutter because of the conversion of PAL to NTSC. More info here: http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Articles/PALvsNTSC/PALvsNTSC.asp
When you view the ripped files on the computer is the image distorted?
I can Play a PAL DVD in my computer w/ no problem. If I want to copy my copy then you can rip it w/ the various decrypting programs available. Now is When I want to make it region-free so I enable AnyDVD and disable some of the features in DVDDecrypter and rip the DVD to HD. Then I try to do the conversion. Sometimes the conversion goes well and a few times I get what you are getting.
It is easier for me just to buy a DVD Player that plays both and since I have a friend overseas that sends me Homemade DVD movies of the family That cheap player has saved me alot of headaches. Bought the player at Wal-Mart about 1 1/2 years ago and it still works although it is probably cheaper now.
If you atill have any questions just post back and I'll try and answer them.
I also think VobBlanker will convert PAL to NTSC and it is free also. http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

Thanks a bunch WAYNEKUSA, that quote put the 2 and 2 together for me. And thank u Car.Mike I'll try the 1st proggy right after I buy more DVD's (rewritable this time hehe). I ran into many more methods, there's just soo many: Patch method, DVD Santa, another thread i saw http://www.cdr-zone.com/forum/about2438.html and another http://www.experts-exchange.com/Applications/Q_21029759.html and some proggy called BlazeMP.
And every guy seems to swear by his. In short the only thing that I'm sure of is that - yes it's easier just to buy the damn player and that Sergey is THE MAN (although he's from Moscow and i'm from St. Petersburg and there's a rivalry b/w us on who's more important..but I digress)
Thank u both very much
