I use primarily Sony/Ty media with my Benq 1655. I have had Very good burns, but I have a few questions... First, Doc ty, you burn at 8x. If I do that with Sony/Ty media, my scans run 92 to 95. If I burn at 4x, they run 97 to 99.

I know most of you buy Ty media from Media Superstore, Rima or a couple of other reputable suppliers. Are these different than Sony/Ty? I have read here in this forum, that there are 2 qualities of Ty media, but that both are excellent. I like burning at 8x, so I would like to, if I get a good quality burn. Am I being too picky? Is there a lot of difference in the results I am getting?

I rarely have any issues with the burns, but recently, I copied some disks that were originally recorded on Memorex media. They were from the pre-Sony/Ty days. Occasionally, (3 times in 4 disks), I get like little squares of different colors for a couple of seconds. If I stop the disk and rewind and hit play, it doesn't do it again. Could there be dust on the laser or the dvd. I can't see any finger prints or scratches, but I know that does not always mean something isn't there. The DVD player is new and it is an Apex. It seems to play anything I try to play. Never a problem until these copies. Any ideas?

One more item. I am one of the fortunate ones who can still get Sony/Ty media (+R) at Staples, Best Buy and Wal-mart, but if you think the quality will be better, I will gladly start ordering from one of the distributers that you recommend.

that's interesting as MOST people i know and talk to here on AD with a Benq burner, get "better" results burning at the higher speeds, at what speed do you SCAN the discs? using Nero cd-dvd speed as well? are you using the 8x rated or 16x rated Sony/TYs? DVD-R or DVD+R? what firmware are you currently using? what program are you using to burn? do you have SolidBurn enabled in QSuite, WOPC, other settings? if you DO have Solidburn enabled to "learn" the media, how many pieces have you used? see, the list continues, there could be quite a few factors in this as EVERYONE's setup/burning process is different :)

as you can see, most recently, i changed a few of my settings in QSuite, and i get CONSISTENT 99 scores burning all the media i have @8x (regardless of rated speed) here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/7/330512

it's hard to give you a straight answer as naturally our setups will vary, and i also use a benq 1650 rather than the 1655 that you currently use...hehe, personal preference again as i don't feel the need for lightscribe FOR ME at this time~ :)

don't think you are being "too picky" i'm much the same way as you when i view my backups/run quality scan checks myself...my PERSONAL OPINION on the validity of the scans is i feel 95+ scores are considered excellent and anything in the 90s range is very good/above average. :)

there really should be NO DIFFERENCE between the unbranded TYs and the Sony branded TYs, they are in fact BOTH manufactured by Taiyo Yuden and the only discernable difference is purely aesthetic/cosmetic. both of them should adhere to TY's high quality control standards, unless a "bad batch" slipped by with EITHER of the two (which is more than possible, but should be fairly rare) :)

as to the little squares you are experiencing, once again, could be many diff. factors : standalone compatibility, multi-tasking during the burn, dusty laser as you pointed out, could come down to which format you are using (dvd-r or DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom or plain ole' dvd+r) :)

you asked for a few "ideas" to consider, so that's my take on it...need a bit more info to come to a more definite answer, also, i'm sure others will give you their suggestions as well, all the things i mentioned COULD or COULD NOT be the issues that are involved. :)

docTY~

@docTY

Thank You for your quick response. First let me say that when I went to Egghead.com to buy a Benq, the only one available was a 1655 and it was on sale. Like you, lightscribe is too slow. I like the Sharpie.

I use 8x Sony/TYs +R. They are made in Japan and have the white Octagon spacer. I do use Nero speed for scans. I have tried both 4x and 8x for scan speed with not much difference. I have the most current firmware (BCDB)on my Benq 1655. I do have solid burn enabled in qsuite...I just checked and the 4 types of media that were in there, are no longer there. When I activated solid burn, I did it as a system setting, not a temporary. I had burned 25-30 Sony/TYs 8x+R and several(10 or mored)Sony/TYs 16x -R and about 10 Verbatim 16x + R. All those names and Fuji(not actually Fuji) were all listed for many days. Now they are not there.

I use Nero to burn 6.6.0.18. I book-type to DVD-Rom. I do no multi-tasking during burns. I even disable MacAfee.

I have not reviewed the link your referenced yet, but I will be happy to follow your suggestions if that is what is in that link.

this is what jumped out at me in your reply...did you clear the EEPROM settings when you updated to the newest firmware or have you had this firmware for some time now?

you probably already know this, but once you update your firmware to a new version, the media you already have stored in QSuite/SolidBurn will have to be "re-learned" :) as to why they are "no longer there" i'm assuming that you burned with the aforementioned media BEFORE a recent flash??? since you made it a permanent setting, i see no other way they would disappear, unless you re-flashed again~ :) or you accidently used the EEPROM clean tool to start with a "clean slate" :P

i would give those Sony/TYs a few more burns to see if SolidBurn "kicks in" soon, also, if you haven't noticed already, the YUDEN000T02 discs that you are using currently (8x dvd+r) are already in Benq's firmware tables, so you could try activating the Solidburn for KNOWN MEDIA as well (this is DEACTIVATED by default, only the unknown media is activated by default) :)

lotta diff. things to try, i wouldn't be TOO concerned about it all as 95 is STILL an excellent score, but if you INSIST on getting 97-99 (which is only like 1-2 PIF errors LESS than a 95 score), then take a look at that link i gave you earlier...in that thread, member "zebadee" is like one of THE MOST knowledgeable members i know about Benq drives and details of firmware, etc...earlier in the thread, he mentioned about re-flashing drives as sometimes it "kick starts" some of the functions, and he even mentioned cross-flashing to a diff. COMPATIBLE drive model and then BACK to the original model to ensure you get a "GOOD flash" on your drive~ :) or flashing in safe mode, etc...

or, if all else fails to remedy your current situation burnin @8x, then slow it down to 4x as you said it gave you "better results" :) i know you wanna burn @8x like the rest of us, but if the scores are not acceptable to you @8x, no other choice than to revert back to what gives YOU "better results" :)

docTY~

good luck

edit: actually, BCHB is the MOST current firmware for your drive, found here: http://support.benq.com/files/storage/Firmware/DVDRW/DW1655/BCHB.zip

i happen to be the type to USE and OPTIMIZE the newest and most recent firmwares available, despite others claiming to be having "trouble/issues" regarding the newest ones...you could "play it safe" and continue to use BCDB, OR, you could flash it to the newest one and SEE if it does or does not improve your scores (mind you, give it a few burns with SolidBurn activated before passing judgement on the firmware) :) you might be pleasantly surprised, and in your current situation, it wouldn't hurt any to TRY, if you don't like it, flash back to the one you have now~ :)

hehe

@ docTY

I never flashed the drive. That was the firmware that came with the drive.

You are right, I was probably tired one night(hence "NytBurnr), and Cleaned out what was there by accident. I will burn a few disks and check qsuite again. If this does not remedy the issue, I will flash the new firmware.

I really appreciate all your help. I will contact "zebadee" with any issues that concern BenQ burners.

Thanks again...NB
