Hi,

I'm authoring a DVD from a recording I made with my PVR, but the recording was a little too big to fit on a DVD+R DL, so I have to cut it at the end, but before I can do that I need to know, exactly how much space is there on a DVD+R DL?
It says on the DVD that it's 8.5 GB, but it says 4.7 GB on single layer disc as well, when in fact you can only fit 4.3 GB.

How much larger is your recording?? You can always compress or re-encode the movie so that it will fit on the DVDR DL. If you re-encode the movie, you will need a standalone encoder. Something like TMPGEnc is great and cheap. You can also compress the DVD after you author it with something like DVD Shrink which is free and gives excellent quality and speed.

The reason for the size difference btw is that for DVDs kilo = 1000 and for PCs kilo = 1024.

So 4.7 gigabytes on a DVD = 4,700,000,000 bytes = 4,589,843KB = 4482MB = 4.38GB.

Yes, I was planning on shrinking it with DVD Shrink later, but the problem is that the file is about 9.40 GB and the authoring software I'm using (DVD-lab) seems to be unable to create DVDs larger than 8.99 GB. DVD-lab says that it has completed successfully, but the resulting DVD folder is only 8.99 GB. I have about 30 GB of free space, so that's not what's causing the problem.

I tried using TMPGEnc too, but the same thing happened there, except I got an error message when it reached 8.99 GB.

Man, if I had just recorded the stupid game at 6 instead of 8 Mb/s, there would be no problem.

What file format do you have? I do not understand the problem with TMPGEnc. Are you setting the bitrate? Also how long (to the second) is the movie you want to author??
