Currently to digitize old video, I transfer my VHS tapes onto a settop DVD recorder. I then use DVD Decrypter to pull the video off. I then rename the .vob files to .mpg files. These files play fine with PowerDVD and I can burn them onto DVD's using Ulead DVD Workshop.

I also want to be able to share the files on youtube.com so I need to compress them. I've tried both Tmpgenc, and Windows media encoder to try to convert them to less quality/smaller file size, however I keep getting an error message that tells me something like my 'video files are not valid', and then the application crashes. (But they do work as in the 1st paragraph.)

So I guess I'm doing something wrong.

Any ideas or other ways to do this?

My advice would be to get a video editing program and just rerender them as a diff file type or small frame size. There are several out there and most are very easy to use. get a trial version if you want.
couple of good ones

Vegas Video 5 (although 6 is out its for High-Def)
Adobe Premire (it takes a better machine to run this but is more user friendly)

or you could try file converter something that would change them.....but i cant seem to find a good free one the actually works...not saying they don't...just not for me

hope it helps

Thanks for the post. I did find Xilisoft Video Converter. It works to convert, but sometimes the audio is way ahead of the video. I had Vegas installed in the past, but found it very difficult to work with. I'll give Adobe a try.
