i have an lg-gsa 4040b drive with the latest firmware , i usally burn with 4x speed disks and i was wondering if it would be ok to step up to 8x speed discs and what brand would you recommend thanks

No! The world is going to end.

Just playing--maybe. If the drive is up to date and your computer is healthy, why not give it a shot? I always burn at 8x.

As for media, there are plenty of threads available to distinguish between good and bad. Hell, there's a sticky concerning Q&A's for TYs.

Since 4x is the max this drive will burn and the last firmware update was mid 2004 - newer media (to your drive 8x and higher may be newer) may give a bit of a problem.
In store look for Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell. Online look for Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim - top notch media - from a reputable site.
