ok so the ps3 is going to be backwards capable, but is it going to be fully backwards cap. i think there may have been some titles the ps2 could not play from the ps1. im just wondering because there are several games that i have not bought or played for the ps2. i hear only good things from god of war, and the sequal i believe is going to be for the ps2, so im just wondering.

Nope.Your in luck unlike xbox360 and wii every game for psx and ps2 will be forwards compatible. You say there may have been some games that wern't backwards compatibility from ps1 to ps2.I never had any problem playing ps1 games on a ps2.

The wii uses a different format(remember the mini-disc's) than there current system and xbox360 from a hardware standpoint isn't backwards compatible. That's why ms has to have a patch download to the hdd so it can play xbox 1 games.

While I think your right Tycobb, i read this article a while ago (Oct 2005) and in response to known problems with backwards compatibility for a certain model of 'silver slimline' PS2, the B/C of the PS3 was brought into question.

"It's hard to say the PlayStation 3 will be 100 percent backwards compatible, but as we said earlier this year, we aim to make it so as much as possible," Sakamoto said, according to IDG.

Here's the article if you wanna have a browse... Gamespot is usually a fairly trustworthy source.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6136677.html

Here's hoping they're wrong - doesn't worry me trhough, i've literally never sold a console. I don't like money being made on my ass lol...

That article is based on e3 2005.It's opening line is:

"When the PlayStation 3 was unveiled at E3 this past May, the majority of attention focused on its eye-popping graphics and hardware brawn"

May isn't even over yet so this is as of e3 2005.

It's old as of now and alot changed. Combine that with the fact that it was even speculation back then and this article is even better.Well maybe every ps1 game wasn't compatible with ps2, but I've never had a problem.Has anyone else?

We know 360 and wii arent so It doesn't really matter.Xbox 360 has a partition on the hdd and wii won't be the same disc format.

Ouch. Shut down lol. Geez Tycobb you know far too much haha. Oh look it doesn't concern me that much and shouldn't concern anyone else really, because there is no point in selling a PS2; I'm guessin they're gonna fetch no more than 50 bucks these days anyway (and thats in Australian dollars too). Never had a problem with B/C on my PS2. Do you reckon eventually games might be availabe for download online for PS3, similar to that of the Nintendo Wii? Download limits would take a flogging! Mines only 5 gig lol

Timmy1970 : There were some people a while back that tryed everything they could to trash me when I was new.Really I have to thank them for getting me so much knowledge lol.Fortunatly most were banned from this forum for being stupid(see nephilim's new rule). Not many hate me though, but a couple did.Your one of the coolest dudes I've met here though.

You asked if I thought ps3 would have downloadable games. The answer is yes.But first like 360 there will be mini games, patches and add-on packs and then the full blown games themselves.

What of your's is 5 gig?

Hey thanks dude - you're a good bloke as we say here in Aus haha. My download limit on my broadband connection is only 5 Gigabytes, so if i was to download a full game, then that would pretty much be my download limit used for the month :(

I would rather have a real copy though and not a virtual copy personaly.Because if the hdd crap's out you'll still have the game. But if it's cheaper online then maybe.

Um... the the 360 is somewhat backwards compatible and MS is working to make all games work.
The Wii can play all GCN games, and Virtual console will provide games all the way back to the NES.

Or were you saying something different? I wasn't quite sure.

lmtlmt : Oh lol I thought so.Seen to many dundee flicks I guess.

oofrome : your right about wii it is backwards compatible I was thinking gamecube/n64.Sorry about that yall.I said Xbox 360 isn't backwards compatible from a hardware standpoint which is true. That's what the patches are for.And even then some games won't.

ps2 played ps1 games without any hdd, software emulator or patches and so will the ps3.

There were only 9 PS1 titles that didn't work on the PS2 that I am aware of. I would guess there would probably be a few PS2 titles that aren't 100% compatbile with the PS3 either due to programmers taking shortcuts or some other reasons. I have never seen any new system that is 100% backwards compatible. I still have a few old games that work on Windows 95 but won't on XP or 2000 for example.

SCEA officially released a new list of PSOne titles which will either not work or have glitches if played on the PlayStation 2. Thus far, SCEA has found nine PSOne titles with problems, and the list should grow in the following months. Below are the nine titles affected:

Arcade Party Pak; Midway
Atari's Arcade Greatest Hits 2; Midway
Fighter Maker; Agetec
Final Fantasy Anthology; Square EA
International Track and Field; Konami
Judge Dredd; Activision
Monkey Hero; Take 2 Interactive
Mortal Kombat Trilogy; Midway
Tomba; SCEA

yeah, PS3 will be just like PS2 with its backwards compatibilty, unlike Xbox where u have to DL patches, so a very VERY few games will not be able to be played, due to software on the PS2 disc...

Yo!

xian: me and you agree on most, so no beef here but...mortal kombat trilogy ; dude this was basically released in time for ps2 and worked fine and so did half the games you listed. No offence though.

People should listen.I said xbox 360 wasn't compatible from a hardware standpoint. Some of you got it and some just didn't.

xaznboitx :"Sony just trying to found out how to get Hardwares to work on the PS3."

Were you listening!!!!WTF are you talking about.

tycobb, yes I know there were ports and such of the older games to the PS2, but just was pointing out that there wasn't 100% compatibility between PS2 and PSOne and I don't expect 100% this time either. It's still pretty impressive that the official list from Sony only listed 9 titles out of the hundreds of PSOne games and I don't expect but a handful of titles to be incompatible with the PS3 either.

Yeah I agree. There will probably be a handful of titles not compatible for ps3.There won't be a patch for every game or partition on the hdd like the 360 was I don't think though.

Hey guys, been busy but i'm back in the fray. Tycobb, we don't have koala's on our lightpoles as stated above lol. We are quite a civilised country and we're currently working on an invention we call 'toilet paper' - nah just kidding. Trust me, we're like a mini-America, but the Public transport is shithouse.

OofRome - I meant by that comment that we know the Wii and Xbox 360 aren't fully backwards compatible in the sense that the games you already own won't be compatible for the play on the Wii (though the download catalouge will be available), and I've heard backwards compatibility for the 360 is simply at MS's discretion. I've heard they will release a patch for the games that are to be backwards compatible - and I'm assuming that won't be the entire catalouge. They could really be dogs and make us pay for the patches as well i guess lol. Is that fact or fiction - will MS be releasing patches or have i just hear some BS?

guys the reason its so hard to work with backwards compaterbuility on any new console is that the traditional games were designed on and for that cnsole e.g xbox 1.
now if you got an xbox 1 or even an xbox 360 and change its hardware just a tiny bit e.g you increase the clock speed by only 1,
now because you changed the clock speed there will be unwanted\ programmed glitches everywhere in the game/
so you could be walking in the most glitchfree game and just spawn in the air because if changing the hardware a tiny bit.

so if they make a second console its ging to be eally hard to emulate with out any unwanted glitches. the reason for this is because the hardware is going to be completly diffrent.

but the pc is completly diffrent im not sure why but i dosent maatter if you make the pc's hardware better so game will run smoothly.
except the other day i tried the ghost recon advanced warfighter demo and it really lagged on my computer (even though my computer met al the recuirments) and when i started the levle i just fell hrough the floor.

As long as Swap Magic allows the play of imports/backups, I'm good with it. But if $ony locked it out....Grrrrrrr they had better stick to protecting PS3 games.

if you're a college student, do NOT settle with the RIAA http://tinyurl.com/37oz2z
