Make your own artwork for your next set of holiday, birthday, or special occasion photos. Just design your own artwork and print directly onto the DVD-R! Enjoy the same quality product as the original Archival Gold DVD-R's with the added benefit of a printable surface.

With a larger capacity then the CD-R, the Archival Gold DVD-R lets you store more images in one location. The innovative materials and manufacturing methods used to produce Archival Gold DVD-R's make them among the most reliable storage media available. Other DVD-R's may deteriorate quickly due to common environmental factors: ultraviolet light, heat, and humidity. Using N.I.S.T.'s (National Institute of Standards and Technology) accelerated aging process to test the longevity of DVD-R media, the Archival Gold DVD-R has been shown to safely store your images for more than 100 years.

Sounds like a typical marketing scam to me. I would avoid them.

The NIST test refers to gold CD-Rs, not DVDs. Humidity is a bigger factor with DVD because of its sandwich construction, so that and the fact that DVDs use azo-cyanine rather than phthalocyanine dye make them less stable than CD-Rs over time. Gold does avoid oxidation from sulfur contamination, the real problem with silver alloys, but it is less reflective than silver, and that often means the recordings are not all they should be for DVDs. The question is whether it is worth the extra money to have a good recording last for 50 years or have a great recording at less cost deteriorate to good over the same time period.

The longer archival life is mainly due to the different dyes they use. Taiyo Yuden and Mitsui brag that the dye they use will last 300 years as opposed to other discs. I say a good brand is good enough since your archives will most likely be transferred to Blu-ray or some other technology within a decade anyway. Finding a DVD player 20 years from now will be as easy as finding a phonograph with stylus (that's a record player to you 20-somethings).

Mitsui uses its own phthalocyanine dye. This dye is very stable in both heat and light and is used in CD-Rs. Taiyo Yuden uses a cyanine dye in its CD-Rs. It is not chemically possible for the TY CD-Rs to last as long as properly formulated phthalocyanine dye. ISO 18927 specifies the testing standard for determining an estimate on archival durability for CD-Rs. The testing takes almost 18 months. No standard exists for DVD recordable discs yet, but work is being done on specifying new test standards that can yield reliable progression data within 6 months.

Here's a link to an NIST document covering CDs and DVDs...

http://www.itl.nist.gov/div895/carefordisc/CDandDVDCareandHandlin...

It says:
Quote:
General recommendations for long-term storage conditions:

For archiving recordable (R) discs, it is recommended to use discs that have a gold metal reflective layer.

Works fine for CD-Rs, but gold is less reflective than silver and poses some problems for DVD+/-R manufacturing and playback.

I bought some of these a while back out of interest. Interestingly the supplier had no knowledge of the disks being used for movie backups or any idea of media codes and DVD drive compatibility. His customers were almost exclusively professional photographers. Personally I use the gold disks for photo storage and TY for everything else.
