Hello,
I'm 20 and new to the board. I've read many tutorials and understood many of the basic concepts. To get me started, I have the following:
1) Un-modded Sony V10 PS2(Fatty)
2) Sony Network Adapter
3) 8 Mb Sony Memory Card
3) 300 GB Maxtor HDD
4) Broadband Connection
5) Wireless Network Setup
6) Dvd Burner
7) Cd Burner
8 ) Nero 7
Since i have the above mentioned hardware and software, I'd like to be able to do the following:
a) Play PS2 Games off my HDD
According to what i know, i need HDLoader on the memory card to be able to boot games from my HDD. Correct?
b) Play Divx, Mp3's
According to what i know, there's mp3 players/divx players like SMS or Ps2 Reality Media Player and Psmp3. Do i install these apps on the memory card or hdd (if i could install it on the HDD, that'd be easier, is there a way to do so?)
c) Install the apps and be able to use them
Do i install all these apps to the memory card or can i install them to the hdd?
d) Play games off hdd online
Is this possible?
e) Action Replay Max or Code Breaker 9.2
Which one's better? I don't have it yet. Do you recommend buying these? Also, if i do decide to buy, i'd want to be able to integrate the cheats with the ps2 games which are on my hdd. How do i go about doing this? If this isn't possible, i don't see the point of buying this and not be able to integrate with ps2 games on hdd. But if this is possible, I'd really love to use this as a cheat device to enable cheats in my ps2 games on hdd.
f) I know the best way to transfer these games on hdd is WinHiip which is what i'll be using by installing the hdd to my computer and transferring games to the hdd. Can i transfer movies/mp3's and apps using this program? (Is it just like any file transfer program)
h) finally, to be able to do the memory card exploit, is it necessary for me to have Action Replay Max? If so, is the psx cd used as a "trigger disc" important as well. Unfortunately, i gave away my psx to my cousins with all the games. hence, i can't find any psx disk. So, to be able to do the memory card exploit, do i need psx disk or just the Action Replay Max will be fine. If Action Replay Max is all i need, Can someone please tell me how i go about doing this or do i use one of the tutorials in the faq section?
i) Finally, Do I need a modchip to be able to play backups? I mean If i have the above mentioned stuff, and i use the memory card exploit and have hdloader on it, is that all i'll need to play backups?
I guess those are all my questions for now. Sorry for any incovenience caused. I'm really looking forward to be able to do this setup, I really really appreciate whoever wrote the tutorial. This is a wonderful forum and i'm glad i've come to the right place. You guys are doing an amazing job in helping out noobies, I know it's frustrating to answer all of the questions. Trust me, I know. I'm an expert when it comes to cell phones/technical problems and computer (hardware or software) related stuff. So in advance, I apologize if i have asked any stupid questions. And I'd like to thank you guys in advance.
P.S: In One sentence, lol - I want to be able to play ps2 games, use apps and play mp3s/divx movies off my hdd and with the above mentioned software and hardware, do i need any other things? I don't mind spending some $ if i have to. In other words, if I have Action Replay Max Evo Edition, Is that enough for me to do the memory card exploit and would i still need psx cd? Cause i don't have one and can't find it anyway either. So, if someone could guide me to the right tutorials and tell me what i need, i don't mind complying with them to be able to do what i want to do. Well all i can tell you is if you want to use hdloader to play games off your hdd without a modchip or swap magic, youll have to buy hdloader as it is a pressed bootable ps2 disc. You can download the free version of hdloader but you will need a modchip or swap magic to use it. So either way you have to buy one more thing. either hdloader from there website or modchip or swap magic. i reccomend swap magic.

Also you have a 300gb hdd, hdloader only recognizes 137gb i believe. So your gonna have to use hdadvance.

so i need hdadvance 3.0 in order to use the 300gb, am i right?
i just saw swap magic 3.6 on a site
it says this:
This item requires the use of a no-solder modchip
and that i need some slide tool

and buy the Coder Set Deluxe v3.8 it comes with swap magic with action replay built in.
then download hdadvance and winhiip from here

once you have those do this.
1. hook up your hdd to your computer and format it with winhiip. from there you can copy ps2 games to your already ps2 formatted hdd from you computer. connect it to your ps2.
2. Burn hdadvance to a cd. and use swapmagic to install it.
3. It will install the hdadvance software. You should now be able to install games to your hdd. *note* not all games are compatible go to hdadvance website for list. What i reccomend is for everytime you want to install a game on your hdd remove it from ps2 and hook up your hdd to your computer and use winhiip its alot easier and much more faster. And for the games that hdadvance wont play you simply have to use the swap magic disc. There are many tutorials on backing up ps2 games on this site.

here let me refine it in easier steps.
1. You'll need the Coder Set Deluxe v3.8, which comes with the ps2 swap magic and action replay. You will need this to play copied games and install a copied version of HDAdvance. Buy it here

2. Once you recieve your Coder Set Deluxe v3.8, follow the instructions and install it.
3. Hook up your HDD to you comp and download WinHIIP from here

4. From WinHIIP format your HDD. You will now be able to install PS2 games to your HDD from your comp.
5. Now Download HDAdvance from

6. Burn the image to a cd using Nero.
7. Install your HDD to ypur PS2 via Network Adaptor
8. Now use you swap magic to install HDAdvance.
9. You should now be able rip games from your ps2 to your hdd. But i find it much easier to use winhiip because its faster and you have to use winhiip for DVD-9 games. or they will not work properlly wiht HDAdvance.
10. For the games that HDAdvance will not play youll have to play them from a backup. There are many tutorials on this site about backing up ps2 games to dvd.

Ok i wasnt sure you understood, so i tried to make a better tutorial, and you can put downloaded games on your hdd, just use winhiip.

Ya np, I read the post you made at sksapps, that method works too, just i find WinHiip much faster, i takes about 3mins to copy a game to your hdd using winhiip, where it can take an hour using ftp. Or at least thats what i hear. Any way gl.

Hmm ive never used HDAdvance and it seems it doesnt work with winhiip, so your gonna have to use Hdloader jsut download it from sksapps.

hdadvance should work with WINHIIP coz HDA is exactly the same as HDL, all the HDA team did was take the fully patched HDloader 0.7c (supports HDD over 127gb, not sure what the limit is now) reskin it and then press it to a disc as HDA 3.0.

if you want all that stuff all you need to do is spend a few bucks on a ARMAX Evo (preferably with flashdrive). It will let you copy an exploit to your MC, which can then be moved to HDD, it also has a built in media player which works with the UMCDR format (no chip need to load cds) but the main thing is you can add it to your HDD games, Codebreaker cant be added and Swap Magic Coder will only let you load backups burnt to disc with codes.
If you need to know anything bout copying Mp3/Divx files i can help you, ive been doing it for ages so i know what im doing.
If you have the exploit setup you can do basicly anything a modded ps2 can it just takes a little more work, eg backups can be loaded off the HDD with hdloader.elf or off DVDR with cogswap.elf or listen to music with SMS.elf.
Playing games online isnt possible off HDloader/Hdadvance
For the exploit to load you need 1 ps1 game which you could score for a bout $5 second hand, or you might have a mate/relative that you can "borrow" one off
My ps2 setup
Unmodded V5 (i think)
Network adaptor
Memory Card
only 80gb HDD
And ARMAX
Im able to do all the stuff you want to do with only those things.
Now that i think of it you could even FTP your exploit to your memory card when your Network access ( i assume you got one with Network adaptor?) disc makes a connection to your computer during setup.
