Do you guys think the lag might be due to it being IDE to USB? maybe SATA to USB would be faster? (I have no data to back this up, so please, do correct me if I'm totally wrong...)
Also, I suppose that would bring totally NEW compatibility issues :[

if you look at the specs on both IDE and SATA they are about the same as far as speed and load times. It is most likely the USB that is the problem.
I know an external drive doesn't have any faster load times then if you just put in the DVD
Where as an internal IDE drive loads much faster than a DVD would.
Do an internet search on HD Combo
If you are real serious and have the extra money you can get that case and a DMS4 Pro modchip installed and you will not only have blazing speeds from the hard drive but the chip will give you everything you need to play back ups from discs or from the hard drive. Plus the HD Combo case has 2 cooling fans instead of the one which will help the slimline with the ever so popular overheating issues it has.

It's not the cheapest thing in the world to get a HD in a SLIM PS2
If it was me and you already had the HD to put in a PS2 I'd go to a game shop and either trade the slim for an older FAT PS2 (Ver 7 or above) with a network adaptor and throw the HD in... Use a MC Exploit to boot the Hard drive and you're good to go... alot less money spent...
you're talking $100+ to mod the slim line and that's if you can install everything yourself.. if not more like $150+

Swapmagic with Slide Card + Hard Drive & Network Adaptor
Download HDLOADER from http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=hd.html
and you'll be good to go.. Cheap and Easy... If they game doesn't run on HDloader you can use Swapmagic or vise Versa...

Thing I don't get is without a modchip how am I going to use my downloaded copy of HDLoader?
So I get a:
FAT PS2 7+ (Do I need a fliptop?)
fairly large hd (120GB good enough for a 100+ games?)
SwapMagic and a slide key
and HDLoader?

As long as you have Swapmagic and a Slide card (or Fliptop if you perfer) that's all you'll need to put the D/L'd HDloader onto a Memory Card for the Exploit.....
I Have a 200GB about 3/4 full and It doesn't have 100+ games on it.. you have to remember each game is anywhere from 700MB for a CD game all the way up to 4.7Gb for a DVD sometime bigger they are a dual layer game...
there are alot of games though that are like 1.5gb or 2gb out there so you can fit alot on a drive but not 100+ unless you have a 300gb or bigger drive...
I bought my 200gb Hard Drive when it was onsale at Staples $49.95 after rebate (yes I did get the $ back) Network adaptors you can find for $20 swapmagic and a slidecard http://www.clearxbox.com $24
or Swapmagic & Fliptop $30-$36 depending on the color ya want the fliptop to be

Why did none of you advanced guys correct me? I spent days looking for a FAT SCH-7000 when I really didn't want a SCH-7000 just a 7+ version like a SCPH 39001 - SCPH 50001, anyhow, any advantage over the later versions (I'd have to ASSUME so, as they made them...)

The V7 is by far considered to be the best version Sony has made. It is solid and has a good laser. I have had one for several years and never had a problem.
If your going with a hard drive then Swap Magic, a network adapter and HD Loader is the cheapest option for a V7
A DMS4 Pro is the best option.
a modchip has many advantages over Swap Magic. And the DMS4 Pro has all the features you need for a PS2 with a hard drive. It has a built in HD Loader so it can format the drive, load games strait from a disc, delete games, has a built in cheat device you can enter codes and play games off the hard drive or disc with cheat an no need for a AR Max or Gameshark disc. and other advantages as well.
You can get a premodded V7 (slightly used) with DMS4 Pro SE chip for $245. It comes in a crystal clear case and has a Logitech wireless controller. (teammodders.com)
and if you are worried about the slightly used part, don't be.
I bought my premodded Xbox also slightly used from them and had no problem at all. If a few scratches on the case bothers you that much you can go to Decalgirl.com and buy a PS2 skin for about $15 and cover them all up and give it a uniqu look. They get them at stores like Gamestop and mod them.
You will have a hard time finding a V7 new.
then you just take the network adapter, you will have to ask if it comes with that, i assume it does. And slap in a IDE hard drive and your ready to go.

the v7 is the SCPH-30001, right? If so, i don't have a problem finding perfectly good used working ones, as for the DMS4Pro modchip, how hard is that to install?
I can likely solder it myself i think...

here is how to do it
http://teammodders.com/viewforum.php?f=67 and here is what you would be looking at. If you think you can pull it off and have very good soldering skills then go for it. But i always suggest you have a pro do it.

looks a bit harder than expected, but I know an eletrical engineer who works on high performance automobiles and has wired entire houses and commercial machines, so an hour and a 6 pack of heineken should suffice
what about the solderless version the E.Z.I? what are is disadvantages?
Edit: one more thing, whats the difference in the DMS4PRO and DMS4PRO S.E.?

solderless versions will do the same as the soldered in versions but many people have had a hard time installing them as they can break very easily. Plus can shack loose where a soldered in type will not.
The DMS4 Pro and DMS4 Pro SE will do the same thing. The DMS4 Pro SE is just the newest version of the DMS4 pro chips. Like this years model versus last years model. But they run on the same firmware (ToxicOS V0.41) so they will do exactly the same thing.

thanks for all the help steimy, so you'd suggest against the EZI? the ps2 has NO intention of being moved around, it will be included into my 52 inch HDTV and 6.1 surround sound system :]

Not really. i suggest the soldered in type, installed by a pro of course. They are cheaper and once installed properly you will have no problems.
If you want to do it yourself then you can try the EZI if you like. But get the EZI Pro and not the EZI Lite. It is worth the extra $10.
I hear ya man, mine is hooked to a 56" DLP TV with
5 speaker surround sound (3 infinity & 2 Sony) using component cables rather than the crappy stock composite cables it comes with? My Xbox is the same way :)
the little alien to the right is my PSTwo. But this is before the 2 Sony speaker i bought and the componet switcher i bought.

Sorround sound make a huge difference
your picture will not reall be much of an improvement unless you upgrade from the stock composite cables to component cable, then you will get a better signal and better picture.
like these
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6785552&type=produc... actually all your things should be on component cables with a high end TV like DVD players and such. Any video source
and if you have limited inpute you can get something like i have. A Psyclone componet switcher. 4 inputs and one output so 4 things only take up 1 component slot on the TV. It has a digital face that you can type the name in like PS2 or Xbox or DVD, and a remote
