Burner won't recognize CD-Rs

Hello, I'm actually writing this in relation to my friend's burner, mine works fine.
The problem is that whenever he tries to burn an Audio CD, every program we've tried spits the blank back out and says to insert a blank disc.
I've tried many different things to try and solve this..
First I tried different programs. Nero, itunes, window's built in thing, etc...but all of them did the same thing.
So then I tried uninstalling the drive, restarting, waiting for it to reinstall and then trying again. No dice.
Then I tried uninstalling one of the primary IDE channels, didn't work. Then I tried uninstalling both (it's a dual core system) and that didn't work either.
Then I looked around and updated the drive's firmware and it still won't work!
The drive is an HP740b Lightscribe drive. HP's site has no helpful information, neither does their tech support. I've been looking all over the place but the only information I can find is on DVDs, which aren't the problem.
Anybody have any idea of what to do?
I know these discs work because I tested them in my computer and had no problems, they are verbatim discs.
I also tried different brands of discs and they all do the same thing, so it's definitely the drive.
Perhaps he should get another burner? :/

I'm going to try the ASPI method.
What I did notice with Nero infotool is that it said my own ASPI is corrupted, but I have no problems burning any type of CDR/DVDR in any of the programs I use.
I'll let you know how this ASPI thing goes, although I have the feeling this won't work. :/

XP will run with no ASPI, but if you have a corrupt ASPI you will see erratic behavior, such as only being able to burn a DVD and not a CD or vice versa. This is why I suggested this approach to you, it is definately worth a shot.

Well, installing the ASPI didn't work.
Strangely, Nero info tool says that the drive has no burn capabilities..but it should. I don't know what the heck is with this :/

Have you ever recieved a power calibration error with any of your burning apps? Make sure that all your connections are seated securely. Did the drive come with the computer or did you install it?

It came with the computer, but I've since tried unplugging it and hooking it up again with no change.
There is no problem with the power or anything, the drive can read/play DVDs and CDs just fine. It just will not burn anything whatsoever.

you need a new drive im sorry to say the drives are relitivly simple to install you should get a cd with it if not follow these simple instructions
1.Buy a GOOD quality drive
2.Remove it from box
3.Remove the side of the base computer
4.Unscrew the old drive off the brackets
5.Keep the screws put them in a safe place and some how mark the so you know where they go
6.Remove all wires from the old drive and mark them so you know were they go
7.Place the new drive in the old drives place
8.Screw the new drive onto the brackets with the screws you took out
9.Instert the wires where they went before
10.Start your computer up as normal
11.Go onto My Computer and you should see the new drive in the place of the old one
hey presto that should do it its a long prosses but it should work

Um yeah, I know how to replace a CD drive. I've built a lot of computers..
I was just asking here because I thought there might be some obscure solution.
Sorry, just sort of offended that you would have to tell me to turn off the computer before installing something. I'm not an idiot you know :(

I wasn't assuming that you didnt' know how to install a drive, but if you didn't I wanted to point out the err in the instructions so that no mistakes were made...for you or anyone else who might be reading this post and didn't know the proper proceedure.
