Im getting an official Ps2 hdd and network card from a friend, and ive been trying to find info on the subject.
Do i need to disable the Chip when i install the hdd and network card? i read somethng about it stopping your ps2 from playing backups if it detects the chip, but this info was from the hdd beta.
After installlation, do i always have to have the chip disabled if i want to play ffxi?
any other info i should know? thx in advance

Disable?

Don't hold onto the reset button then. That's how you make the PS2 dectact that you do have a chip installed into your console.

Is it a DMS4 EZI Pro or EZI Lite
that will make all the difference.
An EZI Pro will have all the features you need to install and run games from the hard drive, and also be able to format it.
You would have no need to disable the chip.
Make sure you chips flash is up to date as well.

Ok, then it will not have all the built in features for the hard drive like the Pro version
so you will need HD Loader

well i dont want to run games off the hdd, just the stuff thats supposed to. Playonline and Final Fantasy 11, id be using the original sony hdd formatter and the final fantasy disks

Update: my friend has the network adapter but no hdd, so i looked online at the hdd compatability list and got a Maxtor 40gig hdd. Tried Ebay but people wanted way to much for the official hdd.

Just buy one at your local store. I bought 150gb(I think) for 80.00 at Staples. It was on sale though. Every weekend only.

"well i dont want to run games off the hdd, just the stuff thats supposed to"

actually the biggest advantage to having a hard drive is being able to run games from it.
You could save your discs from being scratched or damaged
You will save your laser life
You will get much faster loading times then playing games for the DVD
you can take your PS2 anywhere with you and have no need to carry your discs too.

There is no use even buying a hard drive over 40GB if all you want to do is run Final Fantasy from it
