hi,

yes you do need smartripper, or any other dvd ripping software available like dvd decrypter for example, but personally i use smartripper because its really easy to use.

go here for a guide on how to rip your dvd to the hard disk read on to learn how to convert to divx:

Okay so I have finally figured out this whole DVD to CD-R process now I have another question Can you compress the video files so that you can fit more than like 80 minutes of video on 1 CD? their must be a way I have ordered CD's from Anime fansubbers that have had like 2 and 1/2 hours of video on them. Anyone know how to do this? I don't want to chop up this movie onto 2 CD's.

Sure, hell you can save up to about 3 hours of divx video onto an 80-min CD. But it only applies to divx or xvid enocded movies, not vcd(mpeg-1) or svcd(mpeg-2) encoded movies. Anyways, it all depends on the settings you used to encode the movie and also what kind of movie it is youre trying to encode. For example if its a 3 hour low-motion movie wherein not a lot of action takes place, then itd be easier to fit into one 80 min cd, than say a 3 hour high action movie. Also 90 to 100 minutes is ideal for one 80 min cd when looking at quality, anymore and quality will probably decrease but thats my opinion. Use a bitrate calculator to find the right bitrate to fit your movie into a cd. also try resizing your movie to a lower resolution. Mess around with some filters, especially smoothers, try smoothing out the picture a little, and gain some more compression. Cut out the credits, unless you like them, personally they are a waste to me, downsample audio, like say 160 kbits to 128 kbits. These are only a few ways to reduce size, there are many other ways so just keep looing and trying different things.

Woah slow down their buddy. Okay the movie I want to rip is actually a cartoon and relativley low action so it shouldn't be a problem but how exacly do I encode my files with DivX >_<? I mean I have a DivX player downloaded and all but basically all I'm using it for is to play my movies in because it has a good video codec. So care to explain this DivX encoding process to me or point me to a place where I can get instructions?
