once a hdd has been installed in an xbox it belongs solely to that xbox.. it cant be used for anything else now except a book end or paperweight

out of interest.. did you buy the hdd new.. if so there would be no need to zero it to put it in your xbox as it would already be blank and would just require an auto installer like slayers evox or similar

next time you try using a preowned drive just do a normal format on the pc and that will be good enough.. you know the whole ...my computer ... hard drive .... tools tab.... format .... thingy... xbox can understand a drive formatted by pc but pc has mucho problems in doing anything with a drive used in an xbox

If you are going to replace your hard drive than it is important that you do not do anything to the original hard drive! Does the stock drive still work in your xbox? It should since zeroing should not have worked on a locked drive. If it does still work, you need to look up how to softmod an xbox and retrieve the "eeprom" this is the most important file, it is REQUIRED in order to put a new drive in your xbox. So, don't do anything to your old drive until you get what you need of it.

Okay good, I thought you tried to format your original drive. You need that to get your eeprom before you upgrade. Keep in mind that the drive you are trying to format may be bad. What I reccomend you do is download "Xboxhdm". This is a program you can use to upgrade your hard drive. You don't have to keep trying to format your hard drive, this program will do it for you.
Download it, FTP your eeprom and 'C' and 'E' drives to the corresponding folders and run "make-iso-win.bat" burn the .ISO it makes to a CD and plug in ONLY the hard drive you wish to format for your xbox and put this CD in. Select the first option, type "yes" then "xboxhdm" then select the first option again. Type yes in for all the questions and the program will start to format and create your drive. After it finishes restart your computer and now select the 3rd option (locking/unlocking tools). Type in "lockhd -a" and it will automatically lock the hard drive for your xbox.
And that's it, now just plug the hard drive into your xbox. If the program fails to format the hard drive, then it's fine. You can still try to format in Windows or do whatever you want with the drive, it just means it's bad. But this is one of the best ways to uprgrade your hard drive and it will format your hard drive for you, so you don't have to zero it before hand. Good luck.

Sorry, not with this tool. This is one of the best/easiest ways to upgrade your xbox's hard drive plus it will most likely solve your formatting problem. I would reccomend you find someone with a CD burner and use this.
