ok.here's the deal...

imagine the ps3 and the xbox 360 have the exact same hardware, same graphics, cpu, ram etc, everything mostly, except one thing, the 360 can output on a tv 1080i and the ps3 1080p,how much diffrence would it make, what would the diff be say on gta4???

ummm i would say in a side by side comparisson the 1080p is going to be smoother as compared to 1080i which may seem choppy.

"1080i sources get "painted" on the screen sequentially: the odd-numbered lines of resolution appear on your screen first, followed by the even-numbered lines--all within 1/30 of a second. 1080p resolution--which equates to 1,920x1,080 pixels--is the latest HD Holy Grail. That's because 1080p monitors are theoretically capable of displaying every pixel of the highest-resolution HD broadcasts"

i do not think they will make gta4 in 1080p, as open world games have always been about space, thats why they never look like the best looking game out at the time. so like saints row does look great but is nothing compared to gears of war or mass effect. also gta4 is not an exclusive, so they will have to worry about both consoles and probably pc aswell.

but if they do then, well 1080p will look better, but it will not be the difference compared to normal tv to HDTV, that is a much bigger difference.

skater685 was just giving an example with gta4.Many games will be 1080p I'm not saying more than 1080i.It's a fact 1080p looks much better side by side with 1080i and many people prefer 720p over 1080i.

The real question is how many tv's will be able to display 1080p in the near future. My guess is not many.

um so,it's safe to say, that 1080p would make life alot easier, becuz 1080i is so bad that some poeple prefer 720p,ok gta4=Grand Theft Auto 4...i think i read somewhere that most ps3 games will be 1080p,or maybe all, atleast that's what sony says, but i can tell you guys,i used to be a sony fanboy, but with all the bad stuff son'y doing lately, there slowly but surely killing their image...all i know is,if the ps3 is not miraculaousy a whole lot better than xob 360,there gonna die, even if they do 1080p output...lol can't wait for nov

"i think i read somewhere that most ps3 games will be 1080p,or maybe all,"

well the exclusive games like devil may cry etc, etc, etc will probably be 1080p, but the other games that are either made by small companies with not enough experience to make massive games on 1080p or the companies like EA and ubisoft which make games in mass for all consoles, will also not make 1080p games.

Does anyone here actually have a 1080p display?

I do - I have the 60 inch SXRD from Sony and the Toshiba HDA1 HD-DVD player.

Is 1080p always better than 1080i?

The answer will surprise you:

pretty much yeah ...your link didn't suprise me.1080i is interlaced and 1080p is progressive scanned so believe me when I say it's better, especially for motion(i.e. like games).

Sure there may be some instances where 1080i is equal but never will it be better. For motion most prefer 720p or 1080p .By the way, not many have 1080p displays which is what I was saying in my very first post.

Progressive scan on a large screen, high resolution TV is so incredibly realistic and smooth. interlaced looks nowhere as good...hell no. Keep that for small screen TVs or a non-HDTV.

Look at the damn animated GIF & judge for yourself!

Now that I've had a few weeks with my 1080p Sony 60 inch SXRD I must say that this display has a pretty damn good de-interlacer. Movies show a small but still significant improvement from 1080i with increased smoothness and less interlacing artifacts especially in action sequences. The 1080i from my 360 is also de-interlaced very well and the results are truly next-gen.

Bottom line - those who can manage it should definitely include a 1080p display in their gaming budget.

It will be interesting to see how the de-interlacer in the PS3 will compare to the SXRD's own deinterlacer. Will it be better for performance if we offload the deinterlacing duties from the PS3 and let the display do the deinterlacing? Maybe - we'll just have to wait and see.

@dblbogey7:

Do you have the 2006 S2000 series SXRD or the 2005 model?

I hear all the 2006 models are be able to accept 1080p thru HDMI.

I have the 2005 SXRD as a loaner from my dealer. He accepted a trade in for my Samsung DLP since he wants me to get one of the the upcoming S2000 SXRD series (2 1080p HDMI inputs) or the XBR2 SXRD series (3 1080p HDMI inputs). I'll be getting the 60 inch XBR2 which will be coming out late summer or early fall. My dealer has promised to reserve a unit for me and I'll be trading in this 2005 model. It pays to have a great audio/video dealer who knows his stuff.

So it's confirmed then that the S2000 series SXRD will accept 1080p thru HDMI. Then that's the model that I'm getting - likely the 60 inch version.

The 60 inch S2000 SXRD will likely be in the $4000 range while the 50 inch will be around $3000. I've been wanting to get one of the SXRD's for a while now. I just wanted to be sure that the model will accept a 1080p signal thru HDMI.
