I was using a dodgy copy of Windows XP Pro for a while and had no problems. Decided to buy Windows XP Home and have had loads of problems since.

The biggest problem is that sometimes I shut the PC down, go to boot it up the next day only to be told that a file is missing in C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\ and that I need to run the recovery console. This is becoming more frequent.

I've never used this [recovery console] before and when I go into it all I do is locate the aforementioned folder, do a "dir" and reboot and Windows works - I just don't get it. What sort of things can cause this to happen?

Windows XP Home SP2
AMD Athlon 1.73GHz
1.5GB DDR PC2100 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 5900 Ultra (256MB)
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum 2 eX
Some software: AVG Antivirus (free), ZoneAlarm Pro
Some hardware: Epson R300 Stylus printer, Brother HL1450 laser printer, Canon flatbed A4 scanner

Is the error message the same missing file all the time or is it a different one?

What is it exactly that you are doing in Recovery Console?

When you said you were using a "dodgy" copy of Pro, what do you mean?

You switched from Pro to Home, correct?

Sounds like the boot file is corrupted some. Easy to fix, but I need to know the answers to the above questions.
