I attempt to open an avi file with VirtualDub and get the "Couldn't locate decompressor for 'MP42'" message. I open the same file with Gspot which says that the Mpeg-4 codec is installed. Anyone care to comment on this discrepancy? Can anyone suggest some commercial software that will 'do it all'? Many thanks for any help.

maybe this thread will help got a similar error message but it was mp43 worth a try though

Thank you very much for the reply, Fixit. Actually, I did try this earlier and instead of the error citing 'MP42' (from VirtualDub), I now get an error citing 'DIV2' as the culprit. Gspot still says all is well, tho. Do you think something needs to be done to VirtualDub (config settings, version)?

no i doubt virtualdub is the problem, i think maybe the video you have has been compressed with an obscure codec there is another program for determining codecs called avicodec http://avicodec.duby.info/ but i havent used it personally give it a try it may show something that gspot is missing
only other thing i can suggest is downloading a codec pack such as nimo but i would only reccomend u do this as a last resort, the nimo pack can cause problems itself but if its necessary to use it only let it install the codecs that have a posibility of working and uncheck all other boxes.
