Newbie needs help b4 my son kills me!!!

My son has a version 5 UK PS2 that has been recently dropped by his mother (not on purpose I think!). Before the accident it worked fine, but now the tray wouldn't open and there was a no data message on the screen with all discs. I have managed to fix the tray, I think it had just jumped out of alignment, but still get NO DATA on the screen.

I have removed the PS2 cover and disc cover to check the laser and wound the laser to the front as on previous threads. When I turn it on the laser blinks and seemed ok. I put a disc in and put the disc cover on to see if it would boot but went to browser then NO DATA. The motor connected to the worm shaft that moves the laser does nothing, should this traverse on reading the disc?

Any ideas will save my little boy putting a contract out on me and his mum ;0)

make sure that the laser is clean, and that it can acually read data on the disc, maybe it can't move so it can't read anything

The drop could have knocked it out of allignment.
have you tried adjusting the laser?

Cleaned the laser, tried adjusting the laser one tooth at a time and still NO DATA. On start up is the laser supposed to move along the guide arms or does it only move when it starts to read, i.e if it doesn't read the disc then it doesn't move. When I move the worm gear the laser moves freely enough.

I think the laser should move. But to tell you the truth i have never seen it move except up and down, due to the fact that it moves mostly when reading a disc which covers the laser.

You can check that worm gear and see it it is correctly attached.
After that you are left with just 2 real options.
Get that one fixed, or get a new one.
