I recently installed Quicktime 7.1 and only after installing it learned from Apple tech support that version does not support XP Pro x64. I was given a link to a download page for Quicktime 7.0.4, which I downloaded.

Problem is, with 7.1 on my computer 7.0.4 won't install. Quicktime (and Quicktime Player) doesn't show up in Add or Remove Programs. Does anyone have any constructive suggestions? Thanks.

Very curious. The programs do show under Add or Remove Programs on my system.

Have you asked the Apple tech for advise?

There might be a program or registry editor available to remove Quicktime safely from your system. Try a Google.

Then, depending on how bold you are feeling you could simply delete the programs from your HD and then manually edit your registry by looking for all Quicktime entries.

WARNING!! This could be tricky if you have not used the regedit command before and could cause you even more problems. Proceed at your own discretion. And don't blame me if . . .

It probably doesn't show because it's not supported--at least that's what the Apple tech told me yesterday--curious, which version of XP are you using? I did use RegCleaner to remove Quicktime, but there are evidently still traces of it there... and that's the problem.

Win XP ver 5.1 Build 2600 w/SP2.

You could try to manually remove all Quicktime entries from the registry before trying a fresh install.

Click on Start, Run, and then type regedit in the box, press enter. It will bring up the program. Click on Edit, Find, and then type Quicktime. Pressing enter will search for entries. When it find them, look at them to be sure it's related to quicktime. There are cases where one or more words could be mistaken for Quicktime when they runtogether. To remove an entry press Del and confirm it when it asks you. Press F3 will search for the next entry and soforth until finished.

When you are done, click on File and then Exit. If you don't exit this way (like if you just hit the X in the corner) it won't save your work.

DO BE CAREFUL!!

Thanks. That's just what I did next--and checked each entry before deletion. Something is still in there keeping 7.0.4 from installing. I'm going to call Apple tech support again: they were interested because their site selected the wrong version for my os and did not differentiate between versions of XP requiring different versions of QT.

Hi
I've unistalled Quicktime 7.1 using the Control Panel, the uninstall function in the quicktime folder (in Program) and then Windows Install Clean up. I've done what rulisky suggested and removed all the registry with quicktime in it.. and still I can't install 7.0.4.

An error message comes up saying that a newer version of quicktime still exists...
Apple never replied me.. Anyone can help me with this?
btw, I tried reinstalling using the standalone of Quicktime 7.0.4 version and iTunes 6.
