Went through this post: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/48608 and it's quite helpful, though it's a bit dated. Does everything in it still apply today for a complete codec install? I'd love to see you guys' codec setups so I can improve mine. It's pretty spotty. ;)
I ended up installing the CCCP codec playback pack, cause it is actively updated. Before installing it, I uninstalled all my codecs via Add/Remove Programs. The CCCP pack is only meant for playback, but I went into the FFDShow that comes with CCCP (ffdshow from 4-29 I believe) and turned on some of the decoders. Then I went and downloaded x264, AC-3 ACM, XviD, and Huffyuv 2.11 and installed. Using DivX 3 and 5 encoders from FFDShow, as the official DivX decompression codecs are kinda wonky.
All is well now and my codec setup isn't a big fat mess now, although TMPGEnc *still* won't see that I have the x264 codec installed, so any video files I download in H246 format, I have to convert to XviD or whatever else in vdub before I ready the AVI for writing to DVD with TMPEGEnc.
Any suggestions to get TMPGEnc to see my x264 codec? GSpot won't see it either, but vdub sees it fine and uses it without a hitch.
