Ive been given a few fat ps2's, and one of em the laser is dead. Rather than fork out for a new laser for a ps2 im not really bothered about (was about to throw it away) I was wondering if there was ANY way to get the ps2 to boot straight from a HD (loaded with HDadvance) WITHOUT usin the HDadvance disk?
As far as I know, no. If the laser is 100% dead, then you can't do anything but replace it. If it just can't read DVD's, then you can do an exploit and use a PSX CD. You can't use a USB drive because the PS2 won't recognize it without a program like LaunchELF, which needs to be on a CD (or exploit) on disc, and the HD by itself won't do a thing but rotate.
there ia a way, but with the cost you might as well just replace the laser. You can have a DMS4 Pro SE chip installed because the firmware it runs on has a built in HD Loader program and a program to format the drive.
But without a laser you could not load games on it the normal way by copying from the disk, you would have to take it out, put it in you PC, and use a program like Winhiip to transfer files to it.
Or leave it in and learn how to set up an FTP connect to the PC so you can transfer them through a crossover cable.
Unless the slimlines had HD Connect, it's not worth it because if you use USB, then that's about the speed (if not slower) of using a regular CD. And why would you want a fat PS2 with a broken laser? I could understand you wanting a WORKING fat PS2, but unless you have an extra laser or something, it's not a good deal.
And as a side note, the Phantom game console isn't out yet, and there's no way you could have one unless you were one of the top people in the company or stole the prototype in the 2004 E3, but even then it wouldn't work like it should.
As of February 21, 2006, the Phantom has been delayed indefinitely until Infinium Labs obtains more funding. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom_(game_system)
