Intersting, it sure as hell fooled the hell out of me, I agree there are many vista haters out there myself included but for many reasons not just cause of the drm crap, but it wasnt just bloggers, I read from reputable sites like pcworld, logergnome, techrepublic, znet and on, all of them were saying the same things.
I remember wanted to buy a new pc and could not anymore at my local circuitcity or bestbuy etc. cause I was to late for XP, even all the people at those stores said the same thing, I remember asking could they revert xp back for me and all said oh to much trouble cant be done, I even asked a local computer repair shop cause as many people know the people at best buy or circuitcity are not the smartest, so the people at the computer shop told me it can be done but they cant gaurantee anything cause they to said it could cause many problems, go figure.
Now I read many people do revert back to xp, we even have sites you can order computers from they sell vista with xp downgrades they supple for you even though I would call it an upgrade thats how much I think of vista, and now you say you can do all these things with no problem, man would I like to sit all those experts on a table right now and ask what the hell was that all about, it was big news in the beggining, and not even one little statement to recant any of it now, bad policy. Thanks for the comeback LOCOENG

i've been using anydvd, imgburn, dvd shrink, alcohol 120%, and nero with no problems on vista. they have never given the "works for older OS" popup.
UAC is annoying, so disabling it is recommended.
it is possible to get a standard 32bit vista to see 4gigs. you'll have to do some tweaking to enable it. LINK to guide.

Ya, I may not 'love' it per say, but I've grown used to it. When I got my graduation laptop, it came with Vista - what a shock. I was too lazy to install XP or even Linux so I just started putting my programs on Vista. Now, I have so many programs already installed, it would be more of a pain to move all my files and settings and stuff over to another OS than to just deal with the problems that come up in Vista, not that I have many. After disabling UAC and all of Vista's other security stuff, then installing AVG free and ZoneAlarm, I haven't had many/any problems as far as security goes. Of course, I just recently installed Fedora, so I will probably only be using it for playing around with WEP cracking and Linux proprietary stuff.

Hi, I have a question relating to vista.
I'm leaving in a while to buy a new acer laptop that comes with Vista home premium (and maybe even SP1). I asked the salesman if the laptop came with a recovery CD or not. He said laptops no longer come with Vista recovery CDs, but that I can make one myself. He didn't know how, so here is my question:
Can I make a recovery/installation CD of vista, and if so how?????????
This is the first thing I want to do when I get the laptop to be on the safe side
Thanks

Quote: NOTE
The Recovery Disc created here does not install Vista. It is also not like the OEM Vista recovery DVD that comes with most store bought computers. Instead it is used to boot from to repair your already installed Vista. See the example below for the options available from the recovery disc when booted from.
Tip
This can be useful if you only have a OEM Vista recovery DVD or partition and would like to have a dvd to boot from to repair your Vista instead of reinstalling it. Plus, the recovery disk files are small enough to fit on a CD if you do not want to or can use a DVD.

Laptops may not have recovery dics but they di cine up with their own recovery disc makers from any laptop you get soo all you need is a dew blank DVD's. I did this when i bought my laptop and my sisters in dubai.

@Ray92-
I don't think Vista itself has a recovery disk maker. However, usually the manufacturers install some sort of proprietary program that you can use to create recovery disks. For example, my Sony Vaio came with a Sony Vaio proprietary program that I used to create my restore disks. I suggest finding the program that came with your laptop (look for a start help center as it may have a link or directions), make the disks, then either (a) remove all Vista/manufacturer crap programs, or (b) trash Vista altogether and install XP, Linux, or something. I would recommend (b) if you have enough know how to do that. I probably should say though, that I am still running Vista because I was too lazy to deal with it at first, so now I've got all my programs and stuff on it.

I'll stick with Vista, as I don't really mind it. I just wanted to know if it was possible to create a restore disk before I bought my acer, as I've I heard they come loaded with tonnes of crap.
Once I'll get it, I'll look for a program that will let me make a restore disk
Thanks for your replies

Sorry ment that laptops may not come with recovery discs. but they do come with revovery programs besides the windows based one. And they just require a few DVD's and you can create your own recovery discs for the laptops you buy.

No problem. As a side note, it's quite shameful that customers nolonger get physical copies of the actual installation disk of the OS with the computers they buy. We shouldn't have to make restore disks with our own disks because our already expensive license doesn't come with a physical install disk.

When I got my laptop I used the included software from Acer and it took 2 DVDs to make the recovery disk and one with all drivers/software.
I have another question.
Every time I open a folder for the first time in Vista the default view is list/details which I hate.
Is there any way to change the default icons in Vista to tiles, so that every time I open some folder all the files and sub folders are shown as tiles???
Thanks
Help is much appreciated

You shouldn't have a problem with either upgrading to vista or downgrading back later, by formatting you C drive. Nothing will happen to your D drive, because your pc will treat each partition like a different drive.

If you're so worried about what will happen to your important stuff on your D drive, I would have those files backed up to another HDD or a very least on cd or dvd discs. HDDs do crash now and then. Back up your stuff, before $hit happens!

pardon my newbness on the forums, but i just registered my account fairly recently. here's my question (network related):
i just recently got charter internet service installed in my apartment, but i wasn't aware the they were going to give me a wireless router/modem combo instead of just a modem. i currently own a linksys wireless-n router (that i rigorously setup to my specifications) and would much rather use that than the crappy netgear one charter provided me with. i have never experienced setting up a network with modem that is also a router, however. so my question is what do i have to do within my linksys router and the netgear router/modem to make it so that the netgear is only acting as a modem and the linksys is acting as my home's router? be as detailed as you like :)
thank you in advance, and i don't know what i'd do without afterdawn!
