Im relatively new to the whole backing up thing and have began to have problems burning some DVDs. First with one that had already been burnt and then with some other ones. The problem that ive had is that anywhere between 10% and 80% it encounters an error and stops burning. any ideas on what i might be doing wrong and how i could fix it. ive tried burning about 5 times with nero then tried decrypter with no success

Don't even bother looking at my post below the line. LOCOENG has got you covered with his post. If I run across any firmware updates for your burner though I will post the link here.

---------------------------------
Are you using a dual layer drive? If not what compression ratio are you showing in DVDShrink before you start your burn? I guess my other question would be have you tried another brand of DVD media?

Some people are a lot like slinkies. They aren't really good for anything but you can't help laughing when one tumbles down the stairs.

Hi matt

Recorder: <PHILIPS DVD+-RW DVD8701> Version: 5D24 - HA 0 TA 0 - 6.3.1.26
The version of Nero you are using is a little old, upgrade to 6.6.0.18 here: http://my.afterdawn.com/locoeng/blog_entry.cfm/280

I can't find a firmware update for that drive, but I did find out that the drive is a rebadged BenQ 1640...if you are interested in crossflashing to a drive that is still being supported check out this link: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=153390

Nero is also seeing your drive as a generic drive.

You are attempting to burn too close to the edge of the disc, reduce your target size to 4300 in DVD Shrink or Recode, whichever you use.

Those discs are actually top notch verbatims, they should be fine.

But unfortunately your drive doesn't like them, a firmware update might fix this error...see above.

Way too fast, reduce your burn speed to 4X until you get a good burn and then don't burn faster than 8X.

If you are running a Dell computer and this drive came with it then check out the Dell site to see if there is any update for this drive as it is OEM to their computers. Otherwise going with what LOCOENG posted may be the right thing.

Thanks for your help just a few more questions
-is there a problem with Nero seeing it as a generic drive? If so how do i change this
-It might seem like a stupid question but what is cross flashing and what sort of advantages would i get by doing it? and if it will make it work better how is it done
- with the burn speed it only gives me a choice of 2x, 2.4x and max. so do i just go for 2.4x or is there some way of changing it.

once again thanks for your help so far, sorry if everythings a bit basic.

BTW i forgot to mention that ive burnt about 20 DVDs on those verbatim ones before and have had no problems so am beginning to wonder if there's something wrong with the drive.

Start with upgrading Nero via the link I gave you, then try the Dell site for a firmware update...we can worry about the crossflashing when there isn't another alternative. As for the speed selection, make sure you have a blank in the drive when you choose the speed.
