Hello.

Brand and model of new burner?
Internal or external?
If internal, on what IDE channel, primary or secondary? Master or slave? What else is on the channel?
What software are you using?
If Nero, post a burn log.
At what speed is it ripping?

Is your other burner on the same IDE channel?

Post the Nero History log. It can be found in the following path:

Nero 6: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory

Nero 7: Program Files>Nero>Nero7>Core>NeroHistory

Just the last section of the log is needed. Sections are usually denoted by =======s and a heading and are followed by the program serial number. Delete the serial number and any identifying info like your name before posting.

Have you tried using the drive to rip (i.e., copy) a DVD to your hard disk drive? If so, what rippinmg speed was attained? Try ripping one if you already haven't to get the speed.

Make sure all your IDE devices are set to operate in DMA mode.

Here are a couple of guides if needed.

Uninstall the IDE channel, reboot the PC, recheck, if still in PIO mode change to DMA if available, reboot, recheck.

Here's a guide;

lblaze,

Let's have a look at your device manager.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage.
Click on Device Manager
Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Right click on Secondary IDE Channel and select Properties
Click the Advanced Settings tab
What is listed for both Device 0 and Device 1 for the three parameters below:

Device Type
Transfer Mode
Current transfer mode

Provide that Pic as requested by laddyboy, you should also try this:

Shut down the PC
device0=master
device1=slave

On your secondary IDE channel, swith the drives. The drive that was set for PIO mode, set as master and put it in the device 0 location (end connector of IDE cable), the drive that showed as being in DMA mode, set as slave and put it in device 1 location (middle connector of IDE cable). Power up and check the status of the drives on the secondary IDE channel. If the drive set as master (device 0) still shows as being set for PIO mode, there maybe something wrong with the drive (replace it with another). If device 0 shows as set for DMA mode and device 1 shows PIO mode, then there maybe a problem with the IDE cable or the IDE channel. Try replacing the cable first, if that doesn't fix it, then somethings up with the IDE channel(hardware/software conflict, bad channel, etc...).

Open the case and swap drive locations on the secondary IDE cable (don't worry you won't hurt or messup anything). On the back of each drive there should be jumper locations for master or slave settings (look for/find the picture on the drive for the location info), pull out the jumper and reinsert it in the proper location, where you put the jumper will identify the drive as either master or slave.

What was the mode that device 0 and 1 were set to after the swap? Did their condition (transfer mode PIO/DMA) change or remain the same?

Could be the fault of the ide controller chip on the motherboard.

Then try replacing the IDE cable for the secondary channel and see if that fixes it.

You could also try (although not usually done) connecting the drive to the same IDE cable/controller that your hard drive is connected to, setting it as a slave (note: setting a drive as a slave does not make it slower) to see if it will operate in DMA mode connected to the primary controller.

Its possible that there maybe a problem with the secondary IDE controller.
