VCD Various Errors in Playing on VCD Player

I burnt my VCDs as instructed using TMPEng (or whatever that program is) converting my AVI files to MPEG, then burned with Nero. THe most recent DVD/VCD player I found will start the disk (my menu shows up) but will not allow me to forward to the first track. It even recognizes the length of the CD in the display, but I can't go forward.
Other times:
on a computer:
my own -- will play fine
my work (DVD player) -- burned music works, won't recognize my VCD
my friend's -- plays fine
DVD players:
my friend's (also a VCD player, but older) -- doesn't recognize the disc.
another friend's -- does not get past the title screen.
I realize I'm not giving a whole lot of technical info, so if I need to, I can, but I just don't understand why this would succeed to varying degrees like it's doing? Can anyone help? Thanks.
