Hi, new here, dont kick me too hard. :D

So, here's my problem.

No PS1 disks load. Backups, originals - all the same.
It boots into PSX bootscreen and then gets to blue screen
and just hangs there. I was surprised, that even original
black disks do that... PS2 games and DVD's play well. But
sometimes DVD would rebood my ps2 on startup showing a blue
screen beforehand. Rebooting is spontaneous. Sometimes it
occurs sometimes it doesnt. Weird.

About the PS2 unit and chip. I have entrusted my PS2 slim
form factor to my acquaintance, that does modding. So, i never
asked what sort of mod he did. All i know is that he did laser
fix also. this unit has been running since summer of 2005 (when
it was actually chipped) till now. I have tried PSX games after
the mod, and all was well. Then i remembered that i wanted to
play thru FF7 on PSX, i only played it on PC, at the time it was
new. So, i buy it on ebay and lo and behold - PSX diks wont load.

Now the rest of modchip functionality is there, PS2 games play
well - no problem there. So i figured that i somehow "turned off"
a part of functionality ??? Sometimes it refuses to play PS2 games
kicking me out to the red screen, but that is not a big problem.

My PS2 - SCPH-70003, S/N:FB4101209, bought on 2004 xmas in N/Ireland

I cant reach a man who did the mod, so i look for help here. Any
bright ideas how to fix this ? Is there some sort of mode switching
routine list for all sorts of chips to try ?

Bah, any help appreciated...

Yeah sounds like a laser problem... hope you get it sorted by going to the link above, otherwise it's time for a new one

Laser has nothing to do with it. PS2 games (originals AND backups)
play perfectly well. The problem is PS1 games not booting. Or rather
booting and crashing. That is definitely modchip related.

The unit doesnt skip at all. I use only Verbatim media and record at
slowest speeds possible to avoid usual "crap media fu*ked my console"
situation. Been there - done that. My old PSX died because i used crap
media. Now i am satisfied only with taiyo yuden :D so my ps2 is in
pretty good shape. Never experienced any skipping on my own backups.

#EDIT1#Read the thread - nothing new. I dont have READ ERROR stuff.
PS1 discs show as they supposed to on browser as a black disk if i
stick it in. Only after i try to actually RUN it, the unit goes to
PSX logo, as it supposed to do, then either hangs with logo, or goes
all blue and hangs there. No clicks, no weird sounds no nothing. Disk
is constantly spinning, head is not moving. Thats it. Other than PSX
disk loading i dont have a single problem with my PS2 unit or PS2
games...
after the browser is loaded, so, no problem there.

#EDIT2# Oops, i DO have a one more problem, but it is not directly
related. DVD playback is stretched upwards. PAL console, PAL disks,
all legit, 4:3 tv, everything set to 4:3 in the PS2 main setup. But
somehow DVD setup, as per manual, TV setup is grayed out and parental
controls are grayed out, and it says that my console is USA region 1
and that is nonsense. I bought the console new and sealed, unsealed
myself, unit never seen a single region 1 disk (or any other region
except reg2), etc. So, no dvd's on tv, only my PC...pah... is this
fixable ? Oh yeah, it doesnt matter what screen format is disk
recorded, may it be 4:3 or 16:9 its all the same - stretched upwards.
Crap....

It definately sounds like a laser proble. Ever since the PS2 consoles were released, they have always had problems with CD-based discs. PS2/PSX games included. Theese discs put heavy stress on the laser, this is probably what has happened. You may need to invest in a new laser. And if you are not satisfied it is the laser, then find your chip at http://www.modchipstore.com and find out which chip you have, so you can try enabling PSX mode incase it was disabled. But I do think it's your laser.

As i was saying it NEVER skips in PS2 games, so, why it sould skip
or not load CDs ? It never played CDs, apart from testing couple of
times with CD based games, so there can not be wear due to CD use.
I only used DVD games on my unit.

Because you are using the same laser for CDs and DVDs. The damage to your laser may not be due to CDs, but it will affect reading CDs, simple. Unless there's two lasers, one for CD and one for DVD, what you said makes no sense at all.

Correct, there is only one laser and it plays both CD and DVD games. CD games do cause stress on the laser, PS2 or PS1.

There is the possibility that all it needs is a simple clean. So look at my guide, and use some Isopropyl alcohol on the laser on a q-tip cottun bud, and wipe it around in a circular motion. Don't think of using a cd-lens cleaner cd, because they do next to nothing and may end up making it worse.
