i understand that from v12 on the slimline ps2's have a problem with lasers overheating, but i was assuming that was fixed... the matrix infinity site has schematics for v16 installation and doesnt say anything about it.

so here's the problem... i'm playing god of war and after about 20 minutes it tries to load a new area and just freezes on NOW LOADING...
i'm assuming that the laser is overheating and not the motherboard. i tried flashing the new firmware thinking that maybe that would help, but no. any help? do i need to install the laser fix or what? the laser isnt' dead cause it'll still boot and read other discs, but i dont wanna let them play long enough to overheat.

thanks in advance

A laser fix never hurts.

What media are you using?

cdburrner,
My son has the exact same problem with a rental version of the game,the game freezes just as you get to the door to move to the next area. To be honest I thought the game was a bit gay anyway. I suggested he not worry about it and he didn't. Sorry I coud not offer any assistance.

i finally figured out what the problem was!

get this.... it's the labels i have on my discs. i use imation full disc labels. apparently, the slim ps2's are so slim that the labels are rubbing the flip-up cover which is slowing the disc down and causing it to be unreadable. i didn't believe it myself at first, but i have about 30 games with my custom labels on them... i've re-burned all of them and they all work without a problem. amazing.

Lol, I've heard of that problem before, but that never happened to me, I just get a permanent marker and write on the discs :)

Go figure,
I thought I found the fix for us both, the old Microsoft Excel rule applies "save often", I found if you save a couple of times during the level/area when it freezes up, just restart and go to the saved game, all good until next area change.

This is the original disc not a backed up copy.

Labels = bad!!!
it can not only rub, but they add extra weight to the disc. Even thought it is not much it does matter.
And if it is not a full label then it can make it spin off balance.
Sharpie marker is your best bet for labeling discs.

Also get rid of the Imation discs, they are cheap and will stress your laser more then needed. I used a few before i knew anything about backing up games, and most of them actually worked. But they are just not good media.
