How do you download a movie then burn it on to a dvd? I noticed when I download a movie it is an avi file (I think), I can't put that in DVD Shrink, right? Do I need to convert it and if so does anyone recommend a program. Thanks!

You can burn the AVI file directly to a DVD and play it in your stand alone player IF your player supports it. If not, then you'll have to convert it do DVD format.

You could use WinAVI or ConvertXtoDVD. Those are two easy to use programs that do a very good job. You'll have to "Google" them as I don't have the links handy.

How does this relate to backing up DVDs that you own?

It doesn't, sounded like that's what you wanted. Have a look here: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/ My mistake, didn't notice the different poster.

You need to convert the file you download to dvd format.
WinAVI can help you do that and can burn to disc. You can have a try:
