Hi everyone, I am very new so please bear with me. I have a few questions and was hoping for answers/opinions from at least a few of you here on the boards and would appreciate it very much!
1. I use to be able to buy DVD+R dvd's at the store with a x2, x8, etc and it seems like now most brands are all 16x, or am I incorrect about that? So...when I am burning movies on 16X dvds can I change the burning speed to let's say x2, or x8 and if so, how do I change the speed(where exactly can I access the speed) in DVDShrink, and dvddecryptor? Does it really make a difference what speed the dvd's are?

2. Can someone tell me which dvd brands are not good quality and usually give problems in burners or won't burn at all?? I mean I haven't burned movies in along time due to not having my computer so I forgot which brands were better than the others. I do remember though some not even working in my computer. I didn't know if like Maxell or Memorex were as good as Verbatim or HP so I was hoping for some opinions.
Well thank you for any help/insight. Josie

A simple search would've given you the answers you desire, but yes more and more DVDs are 16x speed now. You can choose which speed to burn the DVDs at in Nero. If you have automatically set to burn once you're done shrinking then follow this little guide to set it...
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/347901

Burning speeds do matter somewhat it goes by hardware really...MY burner is better at 8x speed and higher, yours may be better at 2x...you'll have to find out for yourself. (burn the same movie, using the same brand of discs at different speeds, then do a quality check)

Now on to media, the best brands are TYs(Taiyo Yuden) and Verbatims. You can order TYs online or look for Sonys and Fuji Film DVDS which are MIJ(Made In Japan and they might have an octagonal spacer) these usually code out to be TYs, Maxell again MIJ, and Riteks are good as well, stay away from everything else.

Forgot to mention Verbatims are on sale at Best Buy this week, and Fuji Film are on sale at K-mart...

It is generally recommended that you burn your 16x rated media at 8x but no faster. Some drive's will burn them ok at 12x. Make sure your firmware is up to date. Stay away from HP media. I prefer verbatim but taiyo yuden (and branded labels buying from ty) and hitachi maxell's are good too.

Thank you. When you advise me to burn at slower speeds than 16X how do I change the speed settings in lets say dvdshrink and dvddecryptor? Where exactly are those options located to change the speed when I open up shrink or dvdd?

After you have clicked backup in shrink, under burn settings you can select the burn speed note: you must have a blank dvd loaded into your drive. There's also a box you can check for booktype dvd-rom.

Hi there,

I burn everything at 4x (Taiyo Yuden included).

Even at 4x the drive sometimes stops because the HDD is trying to feed the burner.

Then again, I do not stop all my background tasks, firewall, antivirus, Spyware Checker etc...

I assume people who burn at 8x and 12x stop everything they can ?

My point is it:

If I take 2-3 minutes to stop everything, burn at 8x, and take an other 2-3 minutes to restart all my stuff, I rather burn at 4x, walk away and come back 15 minutes later with a perfect x4 Taiyo Yuden burn !

Curious mind here :)

i have converted to 8x for quite some time, no more 4x for me even though i've always advocated it for noobs to be on the safe side. i just don't ever multitask during the burn. I use a mixture of 8x and 16x Verbatim TY, and a lot of those burns are 'multiple recorder' burns in Nero at 8x (well two burns at once but that's still multiple!). I have a gig of RAM so plenty free memory for the 8x burn, and one of the burners is only USB2.0 too.

creaky- Yeah I tried that once Myself using The advanced mode of Disc Copier in Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 -Record to multiple destination - made 3 at once using Maxell/Riteks if I remember correctly ! Two Nec's & the BenQ . The 8x media only burned at 4 x even though it was set at 8x for the burn . But all three burns were sucessfull. I think Though that I would use the Simultaneous burn feature sparingly Because I like to booktype my burns on the benq so I'm limmited to one at a time unless I replace my NEC's But it's a neat feature when you need it though ! Glad to hear you around every now & again Creaky ! Keep up the good work Ciao!

indeed, i got 2 Benq DW1650's now so it's sexy booktyping all the way, though i do mix and match my +R and -R, don't even really check which i burn on, i just slap in any of the sexy Verb TY of whatever format or speed and select 8x and bash the burn button. Burning is all good in this neck of the woods. I'm still around a little, i still read quite a few threads, i'll be back to helping out on threads soon, hopefully as much as i could before.
