Hello. I am after a dvd player that plays .avi files, so that i can just burn my .avi files to a dvd-r and watch them. Now i have been looking on the internet, but none of them say anything about playing .avi files, just mpeg, divX and such. (there are also 'cheap ones on ebay)

Are there any recommendations as to which dvd player to buy and not to buy? Remember, all i really want is .avi support/playback, and perhaps DivX Support/Playback.

Also a good on line store for Australian's who wish to buy these, as they are too expensive in-store.

Cheers.

EDIT:I have just found the Phillips DVP642 ($175 AUD!!), are there any others?

I think they play all avi files. DivX is a brand name, and they certified those players as being proper for playing DivX, the most common kind of avi.

I think that model is the most popular divx player. That dvd player only costs $60-70 here in the U.S. Find a site that searches for the best prices on things, and search for the philips dvp642.

(($60 = ~$80 Australian))

Like with square pixels, packed bit streams and others-I got tired of running files through VirtualDubMod just because the 642 didn't like them, it kinda defeats the purpose of having a player that can directly play downloaded xvid/divx. I found that the LG 418 and 511 cuold play 99% of what I dl'd without any "processing". That's why I hated the 642 and gave it away to my brother.

What percentage could the '642 play, without any processing?

About 55%. And forget Qpel or GMC encoded XviD.
