Hello,

Ok, I've scoured many guides and asked many "experts" on how to do this, and have not really gotten any response that will answer my question. Please keep in mind that I am not looking for alternative ways to back up this movie, I am looking for THIS way to back it up. Hopefully someone here can suggest something!

Ok, the movie is comprised of two discs: Disc1 is DVD-9 and around 8GB in size, Disc2 is DVD-5 and around 4GB in size. What I want to do is put this movie on two DVD-5 discs while maintaining a uniform compression quality throughout the entire movie.

What I think this will involve:

I need to join the movie into one large movie that is 12GB in size. I will then use IFOEdit to split it into 2 DVD-9 movies of roughly 6GB in size. After I have done that, I will use some form of compression (DVDShrink for sake of simplicity in explanation) to reduce the two 6GB discs to 4.38GB and burn.

Now the question is how do I do this? I've tried "Joining clips" in VOBEdit to no avail, and when I ask some of the superstars on doom9, I get the reply, "It's standard dif4u" without any further elaboration. I have read their dif4u guides and do not see how it would address my problem - in fact, what I'm trying to do has nothing to do with dif4u as far as I can see.

Anyways what I do not want to do:
Backup the first disc using normal methods to a DVD-5 - this would mean the quality of the first disc is well below the quality of the second disc.

Any suggestions? If you suggest something that works, you'll get a cookie! :)

I suppose it would work the same as a flipper disc. Rip all the files. then go according to this how to treat one disc as side a the other as side b

http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/joinclip.html#joindbl

I see no problem in creating one huge set of files for the whole movie, the problem i see here is splitting the movie in half after you join both sides. Why are you going to all this trouble. i backed up this movie too. all i did was rip the first half put through dvd2one then burn. with the second half i did the same. that way when you put the first dvd in it plays, and then when its time to swith it just plays. no stinkin menus.

Ya I tried that method, but I think there is a maximum number of allowable VOB files and so the movie wouldn't play past a certain period (I'm assuming where Disc2 was supposed to kick in)

And the reason I can't back it up like you suggested is because the quality of the first disc would be pathetic relative to the second.

8GB -> 4.38GB is a lot worse than 6GB -> 4.38GB

but keep in mind that the reason that its 8gb is that all the extras and crap are on the first disc, so when it comes to movie quality you dont lose much. at least i dont on my 54' bigscreen

I'm pretty sure there are no extras on the disc I have.
