Hello,

Another complicated DVD backup (in addition to my Godfather II issue) involves the Sixth Sense. I am sure this problem is common amongst DVD backups, so perhaps someone has already encountered this and knows a good way to handle it.

The disc is a DVD-9 around 6GB in size. It is comprised of a menu, the movie, and a series of extras. I want an exact representation of this DVD, with functioning menus and what not, but fit on a DVD-5 disk.

Now the obvious solution is to use any of the countless guides out there to do this - there shouldn't be any problem... However, I want to keep the original movie which (without the 2channel streams and foreign streams) is a mere 3.8GB. I want the rest of the extras to take up the remaining 600 megs. What this involves is compressing all NON-MOVIE elements to fit within a certain space while leaving the main movie untouched. All this while keeping the menus functioning.

I have tried DVDShrink and added all the tracks, but got some weird errors - so I think there is no "easy" way of doing this. If any knowledgeable person out there can help me out, I'd be grateful! This would apply to several other DVDs I have that I want to backup with extras.

this may not be of much help but there is a guide out there to make an exact copy of a dvd-9 onto a dvd-5 (lower quality of course) this guide used the matrix as an example. anyhow, this guide shows you how to compress certain parts of the movie according to percentages. there is link to a site which calculates the new sizes for you. This should work you would just have to manipulate the the percentages.

also after a quick search i found this guide

Is that link the guide you were referring to in your post? Or just another one you found? I haven't tried this method yet, but I'll make an attempt this weekend.

Wow that guide is only relevent and describes what I need to do by referring to CCE. It's not hard to compress the extra videos to the appropriate size - that's not an issue - it's generating the appropriate IFOs and keeping the menu functioning that's hard!

Ah well. I guess I'll just backup the movie itself and skip the menus :(

You can do this. I took the 2 disk set of another movie and picked and chose the extras I wanted along with the widescreen version of the movie. Then I made some menus to wrap everything into a nice presentation and burned to one dvd.

Check out DVD Menu Studio. Easy menus that are exportable to many dvd authoring programs.
