what speed did you burn at? you should always burn at half the speed of the disc. i find that 4x is the best but try 8x first and see if that solves your prob.

Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are the 2 best imho.
How about your burner - is the firmware up to date also?
BTW may be a dumb question but what is a lego? (besides the toys:)

lol - gotcha on the lego bit - now it clicks ;)
What is the model # of the Sony?
In Nero go to Nero ToolKit>InfoTool. Pick the Sony drive (if not defaulted to it) in the drive tab it will list your model # and have a field for firmware version. Post back those.

If you're not getting your legos on your pc during playback then sounds like the dvd player is the culprit.
May want to use a dvd lens cleaner on it to clean the lens up a bit.
Can't blame you on not giving you buddies anything but backups to watch - mine are the same way!

Since your sony is a rebadged lite-on (mediatek chipset) you can also try using good DVD+R media and booktyping them to dvd-rom.

booktype your DVD+R media dvd-rom. You can not change booktype to dvd-rom on DVD-R media.

Hi rbrock
If you're using +r media like Mort81 said you can booktype. Your Sony is actually made by LiteOn so you should be able to do this.
Do you have a +r disc?
If so see if this option is available in Shrink. When you click back up - under the burn settings see if this option is available (not greyed out) 'book type DVD-Rom'.
editted to add: Booktyping makes the disc appear to be a dvd rom to the player making it almost universally compatible w/ players.
Oops also realized Mort81 pointed out the Liteon bit. Sorry Mort81
